The ultimate PC protection combo

After lots of trial and error, reading of reviews and reading forum posts and comments I have come to the conclusion that the following is the ultimate PC protection combination to use for minimal virus, spyware and intrusion protection while still providing an acceptable level of resource usage.

Antivirus: Nod32 v3 (includes spyware protection)
Firewall: Outpost firewall pro 2009 (includes spyware protection)
Browser: Firefox with noscript plugin

And also sandboxie to test new files and software without any danger to the computer.

Use this combo and you will have few problems.

Bum for those who missed this, I stand behind this security suite 100%.

Tsang 11-15-2008 06:41 AM

Hey kandah,
What do you think of CCleaner ?

Gasper 11-15-2008 06:50 AM

- Avira Antivir Professional (free)
- spybot (free)
- zonealarm (free)

;)

As far as a free setup is concerned, that one is pretty solid. I would probably exchange the firewall with comodo.

HomerSimpson 11-15-2008 12:01 PM

Nod32 + ZoneAlarm + FireFox

and ofcourse HijackThis!

Rorschach 11-15-2008 12:24 PM

Damn this thread makes me glad I shifted to *nix based platforms a while back

DamageX 11-15-2008 12:40 PM

Use Ubuntu.

jwerd 11-15-2008 01:19 PM

All those wasted resources on an inferior OS :( I am just glad I switched to *nix based platforms.

The Duck 11-15-2008 06:53 PM

I am also looking at ubuntu, but I like to play pc games and im not sure they will work.

Thats dumb to say. If everyone was on nix then they would be writing viruses for nix. Whatever the dominant os is they will go after.

Apple's market share has been growing over the last few years a lot, show me 5 viruses that Apple has had to release patches for, or something along those lines. This would be valid yet while Apple's market share grows, the attacks haven't.

The fact is, Windows can't adapt or adjust to what the future holds and still sports a shitty file system over 11 years old. While Leopard and others, have adapted and support many different file systems giving the user total choice on protection.

Yes lots of virus writers for that less than 6% marketshare they have. If mac ever crosses the 50% of the marketshare number then we can look at virus numbers.

Spunky 11-15-2008 07:49 PM

I like Norton 360 version 2.not that much of a resource hog at all

Don't care to comment on the file system? :P And it's 14% alone, in the US. check your numbers

Anyways, the fact remains. You have to waste resources for your protection, I don't. And don't tell me otherwise. Look at your memory commit / processor usage with all that shit running in the background. It's fact that Windows slows down over time and it's shit like that that causes it. Aside from attacks, the only argument I ever hear anymore of people not switching is games and price. Defrag anyone?

Good combination but with web access protection of NOD32 disabled. :thumbsup

I actually don't run any anti virus or firewall, have vista firewall off, and haven't got a virus in at least 2 years. So don't give me any "have to run other stuff that uses resources" spiel.

Ok, come back in 6 months with the same install and tell me if it isn't slower. And Vista...enough said.

Super Negro 11-15-2008 08:45 PM

just FYI, apple releases the market share stats and they include ipods and iphones into that mix

strip out entertainment and communication devices and just leave computers, it will knock apple back down to 7% max, guaranteed

oh, give me a break, I have macbooks and pc laptops here BOTH, and they BOTH have their share of issues, INCLUDING slowing down after periods of time and routine bullshit

both platforms have issues, deal with it and stop trying to be superior when you don't even have a stake in it other than being a fanboy

No, I'm not a fanboy. I've been a PC user up until last year and when I switched I have had zero problems. No harddrive crashes, no need to reinstall... and when something crashes it doesn't tank the entire OS... I'm not acting superior, I'm speaking from experience... not just running my mouth like I just bought the mac the other day...

Yeah the web access protection takes some customization to work optimal.
