Screen Resolution?

Design question? What screen resolution is considered best for page design (i.e. 800X600, 1024X768, 1280X1024, etc.) I know not all surfers have a 21" monitor to surf porn on so what is considered to be the best screen resolution to size your pages in order too satisfy the most surfers?

800x600

I agree, 800x600.

Gives you a nice amount of real estate to work with. Anyone still running 640x480 probably isn't going to buy porn. If they're too cheap to buy a decent monitor, they're to cheap to pay for porn. And if they aint buying, fuck 'em...

Thx Vodoo - It seems hard to believe that most people are using smaller monitors set at 800X600? Shit you can by a brand new 21" monitor for under $300.00 these days - or at least spring for a 19" set-up. Anyway - thanks

I agree too 800x600 ....

800x600

So it looks like most agree that 1024X768 would be too big for the average porn surfer?

No problem.

800x600 is standard now. Some people still design for 640x480, but, it's almost pointless. The majority of surfers are at least 800x600 now.

Typically, my main graphic won't be any larger than 650x500. Height is subject to scrolling needs, but, for the most part, 650x500 will fit the screen w/o scrolling.

i like my resolution at 320 x 240. I'm old school, i like everything to look like a video game circa 1980.

800x600

Here is a nice example of why you design for 800x600 and not for 1024x768. I'm sure the clicks too trades on his right hand table dropped a bit when Gotys changed to 1024x768.

1. 800 x 600 pixels - 33,817 uniques - 41.22%

2. 1024 x 768 pixels - 33,526 uniques - 40.85%

This should give you an idea, from my counter.

800x600 is the most common screen resolution with 1024x768 close behind (give it 2 more years).

I think you also need to take into account your audience. When I design for webmasters, I assume most of you guys have at least 1024x768 on your everyday machine. Even for my pay site, since it focuses on photography and the images are rather large, I design for 1024x768. I also look at my designs in 800x600, though to see if anything seems drastically wrong, and usually it doesn't. I'm pretty conscious not to do anything that will necessitate horizontal scrolling.

I also primarily design for broadband users for the same reason I design at 1024x768.

Always design for 800x600. Obviously a design for 800x600 will fit in a 1024x768+ window, but the reverse is not true. Think about it, genius.

Fatbrain 11-10-2002 09:10 PM

I also design for 800x600.
