opinions on css stylesheets?
What's your opinion on using css stylesheets for the layout of a paysite? Is it too much of a risk, since some visitors probably have browsers that can't handle css, and will get an ugly, totally unformatted page instead of the nice, clean one you designed? I like some of the options css can give you design-wise, but I'm also wary of turning off the surfer/prospective customer. Anyone here use stylesheets for their paysite? If you don't, hy not?

I use style sheets for global theme attributes. Mostly link colors, scrollbars, etc... As far as layout goes, I'd recommend staying away from it.
Just my :2 cents: |
over 90% of people now have browsers that can handle most
CSS. Most people/designers are saying fuck it now to old browsers, just too much hassle trying to please everybody. The biggest hassle is the problem with Netscape tiling background images in nested table cells. That is fugly. But i see most people saying fuck it and using them. I wouldn't use them on a paysite, you don't want to waste a single surfer. You could use a Javascript sniffer to detect what browser the surfer is using and feed them different pages or CSS stylesheets. |
i'm a highly trained sniffer @ $25/hr
can sniff out most anything |
If you do the css properly, and you don't go overboard, its good in lots of servers. When I had a non-adult site with css, I had a lot of browsers working. Opera threw a fit about css, but eh.

One thing I use CSS for is to resize the H1 tag for SE's. I know some people say the relevance of it has dropped, but it's still worth using. Especially since it's one line of code.
CSS makes it useable in a simple but eye-catching design. |
Make it work with and without CSS. The people that are able to view CSS (which is like what, 98% in the first place) will get a better looking page and the couple Netscape 2.0-ers will get the same page you'd have when you'd design it without CSS ;)
