15 Years ago, two men stepped into a cage to fight...

And now it's one of the biggest combat sports ever!

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) celebrates it's 15th birthday today. When taking into account it's only been 15 years, it's grown in leaps and bounds. From being a spectacle likened to a Human Cockfight, to a Mainstream sport with rules, regulations, AND STILL TO THIS DAY - NOT ONE DEATH IN THE OCTAGON OR IN MMA!

Happy Birthday UFC!

Machete_ 11-12-2008 02:43 PM

Somebody should tell Telligman he's dead. I was incorrect about that, there has only been ONE DEATH in the past 15 years of a sanctioned MMA match. Vs Boxing that has 50 deaths in 2008 alone.

That is true. Not to mention that Boxing send uneven fighters out against each-other and fighters that have failed the health checks.

Its to much about money now

If that's true that's insane! But I guess participation would be much higher in boxing.

My boy is fighting Igor Gracie this Friday.... MMA has come a long way.

I still love my BJJ and can tap out the best MMA guys out there.

Wiki - Vasquez became the third fighter to die in an MMA bout. Vasquez joins Douglas Dedge who died in an unsanctioned Ukraine event. Dedge was unable to be medically cleared in the US due to a pre-existing heart condition. "Korea witnessed its first MMA related death at a Gimme 5 event (now known as Neofight) in 2005. The cause of death was due to brain hemorrhaging after the fight, but many blamed the death on the promotion’s inadequate medical standards"[2]

Quite right sir
The Internet and religion is all about the same thing. Steal your time and money.
Both is 99% bullshit and infested with people who want to tell you how wrong you are living your life without their product

i watched ox wheeler vs. del hawkins last night..wow what a sick submission to end the flight

pornguy 11-12-2008 04:01 PM

I think it was started before the 90's

I recall something in the late 80's that was quickly outlawed.

Peter Romero 11-12-2008 04:11 PM

There was that Bruce Lee guy in the 70's...

Vasquez is the first to die in a sanctioned MMA fight. While the death of the others is sad, they were all non sanctioned.

Happy Birthday, UFC!

Kudles 11-12-2008 06:51 PM

I love cage fighting

Peter Romero 11-12-2008 06:53 PM

Can't wait for the show tonight and the fight this weekend.

d-null 11-12-2008 07:13 PM

was that already 15 years ago??

I remember being so hyped for that first UFC, the way it was billed was that it was a huge matchup of all the different martial arts.... back then nobody had a clue how the martial arts would play out against each other, there was no real MMA term or scene yet

you had a Tae Kwon Do guy, greco roman wrestling, jiujitsu (which we all were quick to be shocked by how amazing it was), various karates, kickboxing, etc...

no weight classes, nobody knew what to expect.... it was awesome

Thomas N 11-12-2008 08:28 PM

Hard to believe its been that long already.

I think I saw video of the dedge fight when he died. If its the one I'm thinking of, they start doing cpr and defibrilators on him right at the end of the fight on the mat.

Bojangles 11-12-2008 08:40 PM

Happy B-day UFC

April777 11-12-2008 08:54 PM

I love my UFC. GSP is my favorite! I can't wait until the Couture fight. I am so glad he settled his dispute with Dana White and the UFC. I've missed him. And yes, the UFC has come a long way, I think people like Joyce Gracie back in the day were true campions because there was no weight classes, and you fought all night, the last man standing was the champ. Let's see some of the guys today do that!!

HandballJim 11-12-2008 08:56 PM

I was thinking about developing my domain LikeFighting.com with UFC videos and ads. Does google mind fighting?
The copy cat associations seem to water down the sport though...one day MMA was on like four channels.

I think the UFC minds :2 cents:
