Anyone using Solid State Drives yet?

How's the performance boost?

When the new intel cpus come out I'm planning on building a new system... probably going to use these drives.

What do you guys think of them?

honestly its still smarter to just go RAID, there's still a LOT of confusion out there on SSD's some of them have HORRIBLE performance so don't get a cheap one unless a reputable review site compares it to some other drives. IF you can find one of the "good" ones then yeah performance can rock but do your research OR just buy a high end WD drive like the raptor OR what I have is a pair of those 640Gb drives in RAID.

laptops hell yeah... desktop meh

I have read up on them but the price has to come down before I will buy one. IMO they are not worth the speed advantage at this time

I still like my raids... when everything goes reliably flash.. I'll chance it.

same here, I use an external usb/esata for essential stuff and love my dual 640Gb drives which are fast as hell!

The new Macworld has an article on Intel and SSD's

The have two new drives coming out a 80gb and a 160gb. They are aiming for an $8 per gb price, meaning a 160gb drive will cost $1280 bucks

screw that

holy shit, pricewatch has one a 128gb one listed for $359... then i looked deeper and saw all of the others are almost 2-3k

f-that

Seriously...

I'm eating through TBs of information, and can pick up TB drives for around 150... that kinda pricing on SSD will have me broke quick like.

When SSD can hold as much as my 2TB raids can as quick, decently near the cost range... then it's time to pull the trigger.

OCZ SSD are the ones to keep an eye on, I think their capacity is now up to 250GB and the effective per gig price is a lot lower than their competitors. Just be aware there's two versions, some people had problems with the first.

My actual experience with SSD so far has been limited to a little 512MB IDE stick. :1orglaugh It works, but it's kinda small. :1orglaugh
