A good friend of mine just called me and said that he got letters from collection agencies this week all offering an 80% discount on his debt. He just paid off over $7,000 in debt for less than $1,500!! He's calling and emailing all his friends to brag about it :1orglaugh

Variations of this are in all his settlement letters...

"We understand that many are facing challenges in these troubling economic times, and we want to work with you on settling this debt. Now that Fall is finally here, why not take action and have this account fall into a new category - 'paid in full'? How you may ask? By taking advantage of our discount offer to you this month, a 80% discount on your current balance of $###.##"

This guy was an irresponsible bastard who just ignored his debt for years and he even had the money to pay off a large amount of his debt, but couldn't be bothered since he wanted to spend money on other things.

It was in collections and perhaps the 2nd or 3rd agency by then. It already is on his credit report as 30,60,90,180 etc. from original company. Agency just bought it cheap and possibly sold it a few times until you get what you see. A crazy ass offer to collect something. The agency will also report back that it was paid (not sure about paid in full - agencies are often as crooked as hell). The may tell company they got paid in full so it can be removed now etc. Company itself well... their report can say otherwise.

However yes if you do not care about your credit report, credit, etc. Then sure being responsible makes no sense.

unless you want to get a loan or mortgage with the new few years, then your screwed.

id rather pay back $7k then have a derogatory tradeline on my credit history
