Governor's budget fix

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger wants to cut $4.5 billion in spending and raise $4.7 billion in taxes to help make up for a projected $11.2 million revenue shortfall this year.

CUTS INCLUDE:

$2.5 billion in education funding for K-12 schools and community colleges, the state's largest financial obligation, which represents about half of its general fund spending.

$132 million in funding for the University of California and California State University systems.

$348.9 million by reducing grants to disabled residents.

$320 million by requiring state employees to take one day off without pay each month, eliminating two state holidays and "premium" pay for hours worked on other holidays.

TAXES INCLUDE:

$3.5 billion from a temporary increase of 1 1/2 cents in the sales tax. The rate would fall back to the current level after three years.

$528 million from an oil severance tax of 9.9 percent of the value of each barrel of oil produced in California.

$357 million by broadening the sales tax to include certain services such as appliance and furniture repair, vehicle repair, golf and veterinarian services.

$293 million by increasing the alcohol excise tax by 5 cents a drink.

"$293 million by increasing the alcohol excise tax by 5 cents a drink. "

How about instead of closing clubs at 2AM he does like NYC and lets the party go till 4-5AM, more time in clubs more money, and the later and more drunk people get the more they spend

pocketkangaroo 11-07-2008 03:58 AM

The federal government fucks over California. They only get $0.75 back for every $1 they put in.

kane 11-07-2008 04:44 AM

I would imagine if they look hard enough that they could find other places they are wasting money. Sure you could argue cutting the funding to the colleges is fine. But cutting that much from an education system that already sucks is not good and shafting disabled people? I would think there are other ways to save that money. There is tons of waste in the government. I always think when they do this kind of stuff they like to hit you where it hurts so that when they want to raise taxes later you decide it is better than losing something major.

no offense, but not every state wants that type of crap to deal with it around the clock.

i live in New Orleans and it is 24 hours here, and many residents wish they would make it close at 2 am because having DRUNKS roaming the strewets at all hours of the night keeps this city not only filthy, but full of crime

live in a 24 hour drinking town and then tell me about how allowing drunks to party through the night will make the city better, it doesnt. more DUIs, more crime.

Fletch XXX 11-07-2008 06:27 AM

he is doing more for the state by taxing marijuana!

let the money roll in!

"temporary increase" :1orglaugh

here is my love hate with California again... right now its leaning in the negative direction. :1orglaugh

They don't even have physical education in the public schools anymore, its so sad. My cousin is a wonderful teacher who is multi-lingual and was in the peace corps, and was teaching in Cali a couple years ago and was so disgruntled at what he was dealing with. He put out resumes and got hired by an international school in Germany where they pay for everything, and they paid for his family to move there even. Its sad that he left, but who can blame him. California has fucked their education system up so much, seems like Arnold is putting nails in the coffin. :(

taxes taxes taxes... damn.

If you ever want to see the power that the clubs can have. Check out Miami Beach. The clubs close when the last person leaves. On top of that, after 10pm it is illegal for ANY gas station grocery store or market to sell alcohol of any sort.

And that city has ASS loads of money from club taxes.

I agree but here is what I found in cali thats different than NY, FL and VEGAS, the fights there are minimal in ny most security is private there I see cops at almost every club maybe they are off duty or what but they do have their uniform etc, and I lost my train of thought...

In ny the mayor now wants to tax 5 cents for each grocery bag or store shopping bag you get

You choose to live there when you are free to live somewhere else; so why ruin everyone
else's party by moaning about the choice you made to live there.

he'll be back :)

I'm not an economist... but for some reason, raising sales tax 1.5% during a time where sales across the board are down just seems... well, retarded. Don't discourage the average person even more from spending by pulling away more of their dollars in taxes.

If taxes need to be jacked up... I think I would put more of the focus on things like alcohol, cigarettes, license plates, etc.

So true.

People don't have money so tax revenue is down so tax people who don't have money more. :helpme

The sales tax is a fucking killer for low income people and this tax means only 90%
of their dollar for food actually gets food.

Of course a lot money can be saved by simply firing some of those fat bitches on the government phone who's only job it appears to be is to say "Hold please". :1orglaugh

There really is no sales tax on food. Cans & bottles of soda and stuff yes but that is a CRV and technically you get it back if you recycle them. Also no sales tax on food plants, food seeds, etc.
