GFY Insect experts!... What the fork is this???

http://dev.hustler.com/jmk/antbeegrasshopper.jpg

So on Halloween night I see this creepy huge insect next to my car. What the heck is it?

As reference that's the tire of an SUV next to it

jmk 11-04-2008 04:53 PM

The thing had the head of an ant, the body of a bee and the legs of a grasshopper or something....

Nothing to worry about its a type of Cricket.

d-null 11-04-2008 04:54 PM

it almost looks larval, I wonder if it is immature?

it looks locust-like, maybe nocturnal? very interesting...

i dunno but my mantis would fuck its shit up!

Persius 11-04-2008 04:59 PM

I'd say it's a Female Cricket, They vary in different shapes, and seeing how its a dark place in your garage...They tend to be nocturnal and are often confused with grasshoppers because they have a similar body structure.

B O B 11-04-2008 04:59 PM

LOL, you're right about it being a Jerusalem Cricket (which are also called potato bugs) but it IS an insect.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerusalem_cricket (AKA potato bug)

This is funny:

Q: I have potato bugs in my vegetable garden. How can I rid myself of these pesky critters?

A: Drench your entire yard with gasoline and set it ablaze. Once the fire has burned itself out and the ground has cooled, cultivate the soil to a depth of seven feet, saturate the area with battery acid and top the surface with gasoline. After a few minutes, most of the surviving potato bugs, now irritated, will burrow up for air. Set the yard on fire again, and let it burn itself out. The remaining bugs should be crisped. Add water. Only then, and only maybe, will you rid yourself of potato bugs.

Last summer I was cutting my hair in the bathroom, and walked to the kitchen down my long hall to get the broom. Walking back I saw what i thought was a clump of hair that must have fallen off my shoulders while getting the broom... picked it up and it started to vibrate! it was one of those creepy fuckers. I screamed like a woman and started smacking it with the broom. fucker just wouldn't die. I ended up taking him out to the yard with a dustpan... the whole time he was still trying to get me, even though he was badly disfigured from the broom attack. I set him in the yard and about 30 minutes later I saw a bird fly off with him. I hate those fucking bugs.

Voodoo 11-04-2008 06:36 PM

Compare the potato bug to this also..
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._cricket02.jpg

This is a mole cricket. They look similar.

The mole cricket is very slow though. Doesn't really hop. Just kinda lazily walks around. They're pretty funny to watch.

RedShoe 11-04-2008 06:40 PM

whoever said it was harmless is wrong. Every year close to 8000 people die from the lethal bite of a potato bug. They can eat your face off.

d-null 11-04-2008 07:14 PM

interesting reading the wikipedia on that.... didn't realize that "bug" was a scientific name and there was such a thing as a "true bug" as opposed to an untrue one I guess

here I thought all insectoids were bugs, but I guess not

pigman 11-04-2008 07:22 PM

First time you seen a cricket?

cherrylula 11-04-2008 07:24 PM

When I was a kid my father used to take two of those things and put them in a coffee can, watch them fight, then put the can on the stove burner turn on the flame and watch them jump around and burn.

yeah, I had that type of childhood. :helpme

digifan 11-04-2008 07:48 PM

They are disgusting.. as if someone was playing when creating them, took a little bit of this and a little bit of that.. hm.
