Site is down

My site has been down for three hours. The last time this happened my host said that someone was spamming E-mails via their host account and it was using all of the servers resources. Does that explanation make sense to anyone?

hyper 11-06-2002 06:08 AM

no..

AcidMax 11-06-2002 06:09 AM

Yep, it is possible I guess if they dont have much bandwidth and someone is pushing a shit load of mail through there. If they are spamming from your server, then they may not have the mail servers configured properly to prohibit relaying. Either way things can be done to solve the problem, but you gotta get them to do it.

If they are spamming from 1 box and supposedly using 30 other boxes resources then no, it can only affect your box if it is coming from there, or the bandwidth limitations from sending out too much mail.

They stated that they had terminated his account. I am curious about what their explanation will be this time. This is what is what I am paying for. High performance Linux servers (1Ghz, 1GB RAM minimum specs), virtually unlimited bandwidth (Gigabit Verio, Level 3 & Cogent feeds).

AcidMax 11-06-2002 06:39 AM

If he was doing it from your box you probably have bigger problems anyway. Either sendmail is jacked allowing relaying or someone got in. Otherwise it wouldnt be your box in particular most likely, it would be the bandwidth that is being abused causing your site to be slow, either way get particulars and if this continues to happen switch hosting companies, because most would secure the box a little better.

It has been down for four hours now. They are supposed to have 24/7 tech support. Why would it take four hours to correct any problem? Of course I have heard of sites being down longer than four hours.

theking 11-06-2002 07:51 AM

Five hours and counting.

pipp 11-06-2002 08:33 AM

who's you're host ?

CaroMark 11-06-2002 10:49 AM

Looks as though they finally brought your server back up. What was the problem that took so long?

I went to sleep I so I don't know if it has been down all of this time or not, but it is down now so it may be almost ten hours and counting. I received an E-mail at 9:04 this morning with this explanation.

"We are currently experiencing network latency on our 157.xx.xx.xx segment." What does this mean?

Machete_ 11-06-2002 02:51 PM

"latency" is "answering time" translated to normal simplified English.. What his reply mean is that, the network is bussy/overloaded and YOU are fucked, because he dosent know what to do about tit :-)

I prefer not to say at this time.

L0stMind 11-06-2002 03:20 PM

well, your host is having some major issues. having latency on one part of their network? possibly you are on a shared switch and some of the other servers are pushing far too much bandwidth and so.. you get fucked.

or perhaps your host is reselling the rackshack special capped at 10mbps and someone got listed at worldsex or the hun and you are fucked again.

Goes to show - do your hosting homework.....

It is a host my dad was using before he died and I think he had been with them about a year or so. I also know from reading his trouble tickets that there have been a few problems over that period of time but they seemed to be resolved in a timely manner. The host is cheap, $50.00 per month for 50 Gigs of transfer and 750 megs of storage and is fast when it is up, but I see that they charge $5.00 per gig overage. The web site is one that I have completed since my dad died and I have just today applied for a business license. If at some point it exceeds 50 gigs of transfer then I will seek a new host, and much more of this type of down time I will seek a new host. It is a main stream site.

I explained that it was a site my dad was working on before he died and I just recently got it into condition to begin doing business and just today applied for a business license, so for this period of down time I am not losing any business. This is also, as near as I can tell from reading my dads old trouble tickets, is the first time there has been this kind of down time, although there has been down time before. I think from what has been said on this board every host has its problems including down time on occasion.

It's funny how hosts brag about having 3 carriers and still have down time? That just isn't possible if you know what your doing. Sigh!

Guess webmasters will just have to learn the hard way. There are hosts and then there are GREAT hosts.

salsbury 11-06-2002 04:17 PM

i've seen abuse cases where a server has an utterly ancient version of say FormMail installed. that could easily be used to spam and would justify entirely unplugging the server if they're the only ones on it.

in any case... it'd be nice to know what host this is so we can see what we can see from here.

theking 11-06-2002 04:18 PM

It is up again. Crossing fingers. :)

TeraBabes 11-06-2002 04:28 PM

I think's it's funny how you are slowly assuming your "Dad's" life.

When are you finally gonna give it up and just admit that YOU ARE PATHFINDER???

This whole charade, while amusing at times, is really quite pathetic.

Either I'm a little slow, or you are speaking nonsense.

Possibly both.

WTF are you talking about, Pathfinder?

"I know you are but what I am" - good one! You got me there.

I am done playing with you for a while, Pathfinder. So I leave you with this, until we meet again.......

My dad was seventy years old and had been having minor strokes off and on for several years. He had a major one and it killed him. If your dad is still alive please let me know when he dies so I can "crack up" aslo, you sick fuck. :321GFY

Now that the site is back up my desire to work on it has passed. I was going to add some banners into my banner rotator script and I have a ton of submissions to do for link exchanges. There does not seem to be an auto-submitter on the market to submit mainstream sites to link directories????

Yah, exploited formmail can definitely take down a server for a bit... but 12 hours? It has even happened to us on occasion, but I dont think it has ever lasted more then 30 minutes(worst part is deleting the logs usually).. and we tend to keep our clients informed.... I think that is the biggest thing - no one is immune to problems, but customer contact is the stickin point.
