Canada unveils War of 1812 Monument

Quote:

"I've grown up and a lot of people have grown up thinking 'Oh, Americans lost that one didn't they?"' Coupland said Monday after unveiling the "Monument to the War of 1812" outside a condominium near Fort York in Toronto.
"But once I began getting involved in the project and doing research, I began noticing that the Americans are now starting to change history and they're saying, 'Well actually we won that,' or, 'Actually, we didn't lose' or whatever.
"So it's a war monument but it's also an incitement for people to remember what's going on in the present as well as the past."
discuss..

Who the hell would have thought Canada could fight? They're bigger pussies than we are now. Hell, they're whining about getting a handful of the illegal aliens we take in hourly. Canada can suck me dry.

Just a generic American who is either shitting all over a thread designed to get idiots worked up, or one who really, really, really wishes he had candystripers. :thumbsup

Considering America still exists I would say we won that war. By the way I believe McCain served in that war.

Thats what I can't figure out. They invade us with plans of adding our territory to theirs. Their leaders home gets burned to the ground. Detroit is captured and their army is eventually pushed back by force. Yet they won or its a draw. :1orglaugh

Didn't the British burn down the White House? Who attacked who? The Battle of New Orleans didn't happen in Canada last time I checked.

_Richard_ 11-03-2008 05:44 PM

the british.. lol

so, if the war started because the british were taking american sailors and forcing them to serve on british ships, how many soldiers do you think they had available to fight a war? about land they obviously didn't care so much about? while at war with france?

I live just up the street from that. I drove past it on Saturday when it was covered up, and I wondered what it was.

Now I know :)

Visitors to Niagara Falls can see a variety of monuments and sites dedicated to the War of 1812.

General Brock's Monument:

War of 1812 cemetery (on Lundy's Lane, Niagara Falls)

Laura Secord house (Secord was the woman who warned British troops of the American advance and played a major role in defeating the Yanks).

Unfortunately, there's no great monument to one of the biggest unsung heroes of the war - Tecumseh.
