I bought.........

a figher fish today (Betta)!!

I named him "Cloud 9".

Anyone ever have one before?

frankfortuna 11-06-2002 01:42 AM

I had some years ago. They become irritated if they see themselves in a mirror.

I heard that it is good to put a mirror in front of them everyday for a few minutes so they can get some exercise (I'm totally serious!).

Interesting, I wasn't aware of that. If I recall correctly, they aren't the most active fish, so it makes sense.

is it true that 2 males (or in general: two of the same gender) will start fighting each other when placed in the same tank ?

You can only keep one male by itself. Adding two males or ONE female in the same tank is disastrous.

I read that the best thing you can do is have one male and several females.

The guy at the pet shop told me they live 1-2 years. He said the one I bought was about 6 months old.

Well that explains it then :)

I have never been a big animal fan, although I have had a few fish tanks.

I actually had a nice tank full of fish here at home... I went on a trip to japan, totally forgot about my fish, didnt get anyone to feed them - cane back 21 days later and no fish...

I dont think I will get pets again...

You're horrible.

When I go back home for a few weeks in December, I'll either get a pet sitter, take the fish to a pet store, or have a neighbor take care of him until I return. All you gotta do is feed him blood worms once a day and wash the tank out 1-3 times a week.

chodadog 11-06-2002 04:50 AM

1-3 times a week is a bit much..

I've got a bunch of Lake Malawi African Cichlids.. I only clean out my tank every 2 months or so, and they're thriving. Things are breeding like rabbits. Only a three foot tank, but the filter is made for an 8 foot tank, which certainly helps. :winkwink:
