So I was interested in seen what we have the most on this board: REPUBLICANS OR DEMOCRATS? I am a democrat.

Tell me, what is the difference between a democrat and a republican?

Well the simplest definition that I can think of is that a Republican is one who follows the interest of the wealthy while the Democrat follows the interest of the working person.

That's a thing I can't quite figure out about the USA, why do you only have 2 parties? Weird...
I guess there are more, but there are only 2 "real" ones.

See what I cant understand is that in the state of Florida there are more Democrats than Republicans...so my question is how the hell can BUSH win as Governer if there are more of us then Republicans???

Actually I lived in CUBA for a while (Communist, during my younger years) and the stories I was told by my parents and grandparents of that place are horrible....so communism is definately out for me.

The vast majority of people in this country are basically moderate with a slight lean to the right. But democrats have a stranglehold on minorities, gays, feminists, treehuggers, pinkos, so that evens it out.

but I tend to side more often with the Dems as that whole Christian thing turns me off the Repubs....I'm also a believer of gay rights and while I think social programs can harm more than hurt, a country has to find some way to help their less fortunate....but I won't get off on that kick ;)))

i hate the idea of parties. why can't candidates find support on their own? i've done some thinking, and i'm going to run for office in my city in 2004. i'm going to be honest, no mud slinging.

while most hate the idea of parties, they are necessary...if you want to get something done, it's better to have an organized effort to do so....if you have 25 idiots running around just doing whatevere, you'd have a much bigger fuckup than 2 or 3 idiots...much easier to keep an eye on 2 or 3 idiots, harder with 25........

It won't work. You'll lose. Parties basically ensure a fuckload of votes. Why would anyone, who was serious about taking office, not run with a party? It's suicide.

You do what you have to do to get what you want. The majority of public officials aren't really Democrats or Republicans, they sit in a happy medium. Broad issues, like abortion and gun control, are some of the few issues that separate the parties.

People join parties to make friends. You need friends to vote for you. You need friends to help you win your battles. Log rolling, baby.

Yes, and Yes. I'm a First Generation American who lived under Socialist and Facist rule. And I'm Republican, but not a Christian by any common definiton. I chose Republican because they don't just talk and talk about helping the poor like the Democrats do. At least they act.

I don't mind the party system although it could be a little more fair to the smaller two.

What really kills me is the BLIND ideology that they align themselves with.

I'm new to the board, but thought I'd add my opinion on this one. I'm a member of a relatively new party called the Labor Party. Unlike Democrats who tend to lean to the far left, the Labor Party defends working people while not supporting gun control and other leftist ideologies.

It seems Americans have a very skewed view of what "left wing" means. But then what do you expect from a country that has an historical hatred for anything vaguely left-of-centre. The parallels between the universal American hatred of "Communists" from 1945-1989 and the current hatred for "Muslims" is quite eery. It seems quite easy to brainwash the populace.

a dislike of "muslims" is a natural reaction to recent events... things aren't much different here don't forget. we had those guys breaking into mosques... if only people would break into churches when they ass-raped kids and killed abortion doctors too.
