Dizzy Gillespie? he wasn't a bluesman - he was a jazz musician, i'm sure he could play the blues but i don't think he's classified as a bluesman.

BB King.

tons of real good ones really bb king buddy guy (great place in chicago to check out)

SRV is my all-time fav guitarist, but certainly not the best bluesman.

BB King makes my spine tingle when he plays.

Honestly I don't think there's one single standout guy, but I think Lightnin Hopkins, Buddy Guy, BB King, Albert Collins, Junior Wells, Little Walter, Leadbelly, Howlin Wolf, Elmore James, John Lee Hooker, and most certainly Muddy Waters would have to be mentioned in the running.

Also it depends on how old you'll go back.. Guys like Robert Johnson and Blind Lemon Jefferson were good, but it's pretty ancient music at this point, old low quality recordings, etc. It's hard to really judge.

Pft, you even missed my edits! ;)

Other thing that's hard about this is that guys like John Lee Hooker had so many BAD albums.. Kinda throws me off.. Taj Mahal is a prime example of that too

Socks 11-01-2008 08:49 PM

Robert Johnson:

Blind Lemon Jefferson.. Kinda interesting that he holds the guitar in a similar fashion to Jeff Healey, who was also blind

I'll admit, I don't know blues from shit, but here is my favorite guy.

and yes, the first time I heard it was in Ghostworld.

webdeke 11-01-2008 10:48 PM

Jim Morrison, circa 1970-early '71, not the pre-alcoholic stuff...

Roadhouse Blues, Poontang Blues, L.A. Woman, and that unnamed track of him drunk singing along with Jimi Hendrix in some club in 1970...

NickPapageorgio 11-01-2008 10:50 PM

My fav's are Albert King, Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker. Blind Willie Johnson is bad ass too. If you never heard him, check that shit out. I won't say what's best cause they're all good, but those are my favs.

Pretty shitty way to start out life too.

"...Johnson was not born blind, and, although it is not known how he lost his sight, Angeline Johnson provided the following account to Samuel Charters. She said when Willie was seven his father beat his stepmother after catching her going out with another man. The stepmother then picked up a handful of lye and threw it, not at Willie's father, but into the face of young Willie.[2]..."

Sold his soul to the devil to get there, but he's a legend nonetheless

Buckwheat Zydeco

It's hard to choose one over another in this category. There's just way too damn many of them that I just love to listen to.
