server question

If I have a capped 10mbps server hooked on a 10mpbs ethernet, how much traffic realistically can I expect this server to handle, maintaining good speed?
I know 10mbps ideally is like 100GB/day but this can never be achieved.

Why would you want to be capped?!?

You can expect around 7-8 megs...maybe a bit more.

My servers tend to crap out at about 7 mbps sustained...For example, a page with an approx size of 120k takes about 3 to 5 seconds to download when my server is pumping out anywhere up to 6.4 mbps. As soon as it goes above that threshold, everything goes to shit. At 6.8 mbps, download time increases to about 17 seconds. Over 7 mbps, it can get as bad as 30 seconds.

For servers, I use Pentium 1000's with 512 mb ram and 60 gig hard drives. Hope that helps.

You can hit 10/mbps if the line is full duplex. Ofcourse, it's going to be painfully slow. 6-8/mbps might be realistic. Only problem is your traffic isn't going to be a steady 7/mbps. You'll probably see that you push 3-5/mbps with spikes well beyond 10/mbps depending on your traffic.

I'd look for a deal where you get 10/mbps uncapped.
