Police Radar Detectors? SUGGESTIONS PLEASE?
 

So a cop told me today that with the new laser radar guns they use, by the time your radar detector beeps, its too late cause they already caught you! Who knows anything about this? Is it worth investing a couple hundred bucks to buy one? If so which one? and whats considered top of the line and why? thanks for your help!

really depends on the situation youre in and where the cop is - he was probably just telling you that mainly to deter your purchase

It has a lot to do with the situation and location. Radar detectors basically detect the beam that the radar gun puts out and warns you that it is in use in the area. The old guns put out a lot of energy with a big cone and are more easily detected. The newer laser guns have a smaller more accurate beam so they are harder to detect. If a cop is sitting around a corner waiting with the gun off then as you come around he points the gun at you and pulls the trigger, you are caught and no radar detector in the world is going to help you. If he is just sitting there with the gun on and it is constantly shooting the beam so he hits every car that comes down the street you would have a chance and detecting the beam before you entered into it.

It is much harder to detect the laser guns than the old guns so really the detectors don't help all that much.

You know its illegal to possess one in Canada right?
The same manufacturers sell radar/laser detectors to the police too so they can find out if you have a radar/laser detector.

I do not care about someone wrapping themselves around a tree, well unless it is my tree. It is usually other people, cars, causing other people to get into accidents, so forth.

Some person almost smacked my van just the other day. I was getting onto the freeway near my house. Very good line of sight in this area. Right lane was clear and I was coming up to speed - it is from a 35 mph and you have a bit to get into the freeway, not one of those short ones. There was a blackish car in the left lane and a pickup behind it a ways back. They both were traveling pretty fast but well my area was clear. Next thing I know the pickup had accelerated and swerved into the right lane, just as I was getting onto it (my lane had just ended) missing my front by about two feet. I had to slam on my breaks. He flew around the blackish car, holding his arm out the window flipping that person off. Not even seeing me, then cut back into the left lane flying down the road. I was already at around 55-60 when this all happened. Speeders really annoy me.

Yes! It really is that fucking simple... I have never owned a radar device and haven't recieved a ticket of any kind in over 15 years. I find it pretty fucking stupid people have to buy and rely on an electronic device to tell them when to drive responsibly. :2 cents:
