do i really have to make all my details available to for everybody doing a WHOIS on my domain?

We use godaddy. If you have hundreds of domains the expiration reminders are lifesavers.

they also have the domains by proxy option. personally i never used it, but i can see how some others can... doo doo doo

You can go in and change your info after you get a domain name.

Not that I would condone doing such a thing.
