When was the last time you used a floppy disk?

I haven't used a floppy disk in at least 2 years. The floppy is dead.

dragonx 11-05-2002 07:14 AM

Well.....for anyone that is furthering their education (ie, a student, the floppy is a common means of storing papers and assignments (rare, I know for webmasters). I used one an hour ago for storing a presentation for my Masters Degree (Computer Information Systems). For storing huge files as webmasters need, the floppy is a bit outdated.

Floppies, what's that ?
I still use 8" magnetic tape!

No but seriously I still use floppies quite often, even 5 1/4" as I am a Classic Video Games collector. So lots of floppies and cartridge around.

But for work and all, I burn CD's mainly. My wife still use floppies often for Uni, but tend to e-mail doc back and forth as there usually too big.

Spoonie Luv 11-05-2002 07:22 AM

Floppies are lame. Anyone who uses floppies after December 31, 1999 is lame.

FlyingIguana 11-05-2002 07:31 AM

i haven't had a floppy in my pc since 99.

dont know why floppy drives haven't vanished yet. waste of space.

redshift 11-05-2002 07:49 AM

I use a floppy almost everyday.

Since im a computer tech. I use floppies for boot disks, diagnostics , bios updates and for loading drivers

also for NT emergency disks

Prefer to use boot from a CD when the bios of the machine will allow bootable CD's

I if it wasnt for the older machines I could go floppyless

pipp 11-05-2002 09:44 AM

I just used it this morning to retrieve lists of bouncing/non productive email addresses. Had to transport the file from my desktop VPN linked box to my laptop for mobile sorting [read: sorting through lists while at Starbucks]

DrGuile 11-05-2002 10:43 AM

I'd say I use them on average, once or twice per year.

If that.

KRL 11-05-2002 11:49 AM

Use them a lot for transferring small files between office locations when I'm on the go.

UnseenWorld 11-05-2002 11:56 AM

I have a weekly mailing, and I keep a copy of my mailing list on a floppy disk. That way, if I have to go out of town on short notice, I just pack the floppy along with my laptop. It's also a backup of this important info "just in case."

Fletch XXX 11-05-2002 11:59 AM

-=HUNGRYMAN=- 11-05-2002 02:02 PM

I got my coffee sitting on one now ...

They make great coasters .... and at $4 for a pack of 50 ... very economical :thumbsup

bhutocracy 11-05-2002 02:04 PM

the other day - to put small files on my laptop that aren't big enough to waste a CD and time to burn, or aren't worth the hassle of reaching behind the computer and unplugging my sony USB memory stick and adapter to plug in the back of the laptop.. (the memory stick that comes with sony digital cameras doesn't only store jpegs and bitmaps :) - and i've got the reader which means i don't need the camera plugged in.. it's like a little external 64MB USB drive)
but i use a floppy at least once a fortnight... although if a didn't have one or two sitting in front of me i'd just use the memory stick..

i remeber seeing a poster by some company who invented the floppy technology and they said they made over a billion of them.. and it looked like and old poster.. theres got to be landfills full of them.
