Needed: DV AVI to WMV

What's the fastest way?

I can try and dig out my XL Cleaner, but I am sure there is something out there that is more recent. I encode all my stuff in Dvix (spare me your thoughts) and have not tinkered with other formats in a good year or two.

I do not want to lose quality, and just looking for the fastest convert since not all support a DV AVI file.

....and no. I do not want to go through extra steps of converting DV AVI to AVI and then to WMV.

Thanks.

A program I use is Video Convert Master, works very well for me.

Canopus Procoder will work nice for that.

mikesouth 10-27-2008 08:30 AM

superC

it converts anything to anything and its free

Jim_Gunn 10-27-2008 09:25 AM

Cleaner XL still does a good job, as does Windows Media Encoder (plus it is free). I highly recommend shareware app Videocharge for everyone working with video or any other full featured encoding app like Sorenson Squeeze.

You could get with Nader at http://www.encoderguys.com and have him transfer all the tapes for you the way you need it.. If you don't have the time nor the patience for it he will help you out and do a good job..

Take a look at http://www.videocharge.com/Index.php
cheap and does a great job for what you need.
Also perfect for flash with the vp6 codec, should you need that someday

Lookup SuperMedia

Sorenson... Thats all you will ever need.

Well - pick up videocharge as well for screencaps n such - with those two apps you wont need anything else for converting.

canopus procoder works great here

Jim knows his shit. ;) I mainly use Sorenson 5, Canopus procoder 3, followed by Videocharge. :thumbsup

Why 10-27-2008 03:17 PM

the last time i took the time to check sorenson out it was missing a few features that can be very useful. avs4you.com also has a pretty easy and simple to use converter if you only have to do a few files to do. canopus is also a great option.

Can I watermark in Sorenson?

I normally do everything in Premiere. I have used CleanerXL in the past, but what I liked about Premiere is I can capture, watermark, convert all in one program. Including DVD's.

Jay-Rock 10-29-2008 06:39 AM

Adobe Media Encoder is FREE

Not worried about cost.

Worried that they can get me....

1. Quality I am looking for.
2. Fast processing
3. Work, like premiere, where I can watermark while converting from DV AVI to WMV, AVI, DVX, etc.

Tat2Jr 10-29-2008 07:01 AM

You can convert to WMV from the premiere timeline (at least in 6.5). I usually use the stand alone WMV batch encoder from microsoft though, but you have to have your watermark already on the DV file for that.

I've got different profiles if ya need them (16:9 DVD quality,Dial-up,Zune,720p and 4:3 DVD,dial-up,zune). Email me if you want them. Got a few more minutes before bedtime! :)

Premiere is a great editing app but it isn't a great capture app nor is it a batch video encoding program, so it's not possible to encode to multiple formats and bitrates at one time, and I never use it for that purpose.

Cleaner XL 1.5 does have the ability to add watermarks during the encoding process, but Sorenson Squeeze amazingly lacks this feature, except for a feature in the Quicktime options.

True dat!!!

I do not 'batch encode'. I encode for my personal preference, and premiere has been great for that over the years.

farkedup 10-29-2008 08:14 AM

Told ya like a hundred times LOL send it over to me and I'll take care of it all ;) fastest - call somebody to pick it up and we can use something like an E-SATA hard drive and just go back and forth with it instead of those long upload times.

Come on, everyone batch encodes at some point even if it is a small number of your own videos. You are limited to one movie at a time when you use an editing app to do encoding, one format and one frame size and one bitrate at a time. For that reason Premiere is awkward to use for this purpose. Unlike Cleaner XL which can encode say, twenty of your videos to one or more formats and frame sizes while you are sleeping. With Premiere one would have to do one video at a time and reload the next movie and re-export twenty times.

And on top of that there is another issue-- an editing app like Premiere is re-sizing the watermark from the timeline on the fly with each encoding job resulting in my opinion is a lesser quality result, rather than using the watermark at the exact size you want it in the final format like you can do if you create it specifically to be added during the encoding process to fit into the bottom right of a 320 x 240 frame. The watermark will come out crisper that way.
