No he did not live a "good portion of his life" in Indonesia. He lived there in three years until he was 10 years old. His father was not a Muslim. He was raised by a Muslim family but became a Atheist.

The McCain campaign is based on fear. Spreading rumours and firing up under stories like "Obama is a Muslim" with the purpose of catching the votes of the lower and more convienceable part of the public.
In other words. They are well aware this sort of campaign will have little or no effect on the educated part of the population because the majority there are smart enough to see through such a basic spinn.
