prof. photographers inside please [help needed with high res pictures and filesize]
 

i have some high resolution pictures that i want to make available for download to members of our sites but when i try and zip them the size of the zipfile doesnt really change much compared to how much space they take up unpacked..

So my question is is there a way to get a high resolution picture to shrink in filesize without loosing quality ? i have tried to strip them of exif info but that doesnt really make any difference as each file only shrink by aprox 200kb a piece..

To do a size comparison i checked out the size of 73 high resolution from femjoy and they state an aprox 75MB download for the images where as my zipfile would take up 260MB+ - so either i am doing something wrong or my pictures have too much junk in the trunk that my stripperprogram doesnt remove ?

any info on what to look for or how to shrink a hi resolution picture in filesize without loosing quality ?

The only way that I know to do this is to save the pics out with more compression than your saving them now. Take the raw pic and "save for the web" within photoshop. Try one at 50%, 60%, 70%, etc..etc.. and then analyze them and see how far you can compress them and still retain the quality that you want. Once you've figured out the magic compression ratio - reprocess the pics in photoshop, rezip and you'll be good to go.

shrinking resolution would make significant difference too... instead of giving them 10MP pics, you could probably give them 6MP at close to half the file size....

the files are already compressed


the smaller image size will produce a smaller file size... unless you use 'tif' or 'bmp'

they are using a better compression softeware than you OR you think you need a big file size to deliver a good image. when you resize the image, just do NOT compress it.

the smaller the image the smaller the file size... I'm really not sure what you're seeing that bothers you...

ZIPping jpegs is really just for convenience as they're already highly compressed.

Generally the only way to reduce the filesize of a jpeg is to save it at a lesser quality, or reduce the dimensions of the image.

BTW what size (resolution) are your images and what camera did they come from?
