That video is one way to put it, but at heart, fiat currencies represent the productivity of a nation. Money simply is a measure for how much work a human being does, how efficient, and how rare/difficult the work being done is.
All the lunatics calling for the gold standard are basically stuck in another era and they can't explain the following simple 'dilemma': Why is the United States a wealthy country while countries with tons of resources ( Nigeria/Venezuela for example ) are poor ? The obvious answer is ofcourse that natural resources alone have no bearing on the wealth of a nation and it is up to productivity and technological advances to bring wealth to humans. As long as the United States keeps up its productivity and R&D, they have nothing to fear. |
Money? food , booze and women

Money is a social chit based on what you provide society.
You mow a yard you get 25 social chits to exchange for someone else's work. You play basketball you receive 10 million social chits because thousands of people pay you. The obvious way to receive the most chits is to provide your service to more than one person at the same time. |
Money means never having to say you're sorry

I do my banking online. I check my accounts and pay bills electronically; numbers flow in from some people and flow out to others. It's no different than cut-n-paste from one spreadsheet field to another. Nothing of real value exchanges hands anymore, except (sometimes) massive gold transfers between nations. Sure, "money" is a means by which goods and services can be "equalized" in value, but the "value" of currency today is no more than the faith that people put into it. In other words, money has value because you believe it does. The U.S. Treasury states that "The motto IN GOD WE TRUST was placed on United States coins largely because of the increased religious sentiment existing during the Civil War." But did you ever consider that U.S. currency says "In God We Trust" not because we as a nation are trying to force religious ideals on people, but because it is only God, and not the paper or coins that these words are printed on, that can be trusted? It's not like they didn't warn you... |
