Just heard the new Guns N roses single...

Well, it was the title track Chinese Democraty. Here are my impressions:

-Overall good song
-Way over produced which takes away the "dangerous" factor their rock needs to be effective
-Good guitars but missing Slash blues touch which makes all the difference in the world.
-As always, good vocal line ( Axl has a touch for catchy vocal melody)

Verdict? To be fair, it's a good 8/10. Of course, it's not Appetite For Destruction but I believe we have to be fair and give the album a chance. If you listen to the song Chinese Democraty and your comparision point is Welcome to the Jungle, then there's no way the new material will live up to the expectations.

PS: same goes for bands like Metallica, Pink Floyd or all other major acts that had a master piece album 20 years ago...

Anybody else has heard the song?

MrAwesome 10-22-2008 07:32 AM

they're still around??

Yeah, I understand your surprise. That album has been in the making since 1996.. so 12 years now! It's kind of stupid of Axl because the more the fans wait, the higher the expectations.

Now, I'm willing to give the album a fair listenning ( supposedly available November 20th) but many if not most early fans will just destroy it with bad reviews with the same arguments: you make me wait 12 years for an album and the songs are good but not all pure genious so its worth shit.

But still, i predict a very good album sales wise... something like 10 millions copy worldwide.

WebairGerard 10-22-2008 07:41 AM

have not heard anything from it yet. but it's NOT GN'R regardless of what they call themselves.

Evil Chris 10-22-2008 07:41 AM

I haven't heard it yet Pat. Hopefully Sirius will start playing it soon.

Bryan G 10-22-2008 07:43 AM

Heard it and for something that took 13 years to make its a pile of shit. Sorry it BLOWS

Once again, I agree on this. Axl shouldn't call his album Guns n Roses. But that's what it is.

Here's another prediction and this one is wild!! Now that Velvet Revolver is done, within the end of 2009, the original lineup will get back together and announce a world tour and it'll be the most lucrative tour in the history of music.

I think people would pay the big price to see the original line up but not to see Axl with a bunch of clowns.

Agent 488 10-22-2008 07:46 AM

you can find the leaked songs on youtube. unbelievably bad.

GNR is gonna get a lot of that, and its Axl's fault if many mad people think 13 years makes whatever you come up with pure shit. I wouldn't be surprised if most people would quote you and say "same here" Bryan.

Yeah, but live tracks usually don't give a good idea since the sound is always shitty and the crowd doesn't know the songs so the reaction is not the same... Just my 2cents

Manowar 10-22-2008 08:41 AM

i listened to the early leaks a long time ago and now i'm waiting for the official singles to get raido play

i keep hearing shit copies

I would.

Saw them twice back in the day, and I'd drop the cash to see them again. As both the brats were raised on GnR, I'd have to take them too.

Hell, the manchild is 21 now, and in my mind, I can still clearly see him sitting in the back seat, in his car seat, singing along to the cassette.

Take me down to the Paradise City where the grass is green and the girls are pretty

yup. when you hear all the new tracks you realize that slash and the band were 95% of the sound. without you just have a weird old guy with a whiny voice and some uninspired studio musicians.

Triple10Terry 10-22-2008 09:15 AM

Pretty good song. Definitely missing Slash.

I think my favorite of their new songs has got to be Madagascar. Love when they work with an orchestra.

Madagascar

tony286 10-22-2008 09:20 AM

its not bad, I dont understand he just didnt come out with a solo record. Its really not guns n roses.

Supz 10-22-2008 02:42 PM

Andy CHOOPA 10-22-2008 03:05 PM

Huuge GnR fan, and of course its no Appetite, I just wish he would put it under a different name and not ruin the legacy.

Lots of people will buy Guns n Roses, not many people would buy Axl Rose

Yeah, I'm with Gerard that, no matter how good Axl is solo, that is not GNR.

I won't be going to any nostalgia reunion tours though. Those things tend to be too tragic and GNR was not the best of the stadium bands even in their heyday.

Why do you suppose that is? I'm a bit puzzled. Snakepit and Velvet Revolver etc. have moved some units.

The reason is very simple: He owns the GNR name, and he owes the record company a few more albums from the contract they gave him long ago.

No Slash, No Guns-N-Roses.

Slash is Gun's-N-Roses. Period.

axl's mental illness doesn't really allow him to tour

The studio tracks have been leaked online for a while. If you're a fan of Appetite, you'll hate it. If you liked Use Your Illusion(s), you'll probably like this stuff too.

Trust me, many other bands said that they would NEVER reunite under no circumstance whatsoever and next thing you know, after a couple of years, they comes back!

Think Robert Plant and Zep
VanHalen and Diamond Dave
Motley Crue with Vince Neil
Dave Navarro and Janes Addiction
Stone Temple Pilot and Scott Weiland
Ozzy and Black Sabbath
Peter Murphy and Bauhaus
Zach and RATM ( at least for one show...for the moment)

and the list goes on in all genres and eras.

But there are bands that never get back for real... Jello and the Dead Kennedys. That will never happen!

So all this t say that if Axl ever understands that what the fans REALLY want is the original lineup, maybe he'll make an offer to the rest of the band. Just maybe...

I used to work for Slash's Snakepit as a production assistant so I know a bit about GnR and the band dynamics. For a GnR reunion three things would have to happen...

1) Axl would have to go broke and get sane
2) Izzy would have to care
3) Steven Adler would have to not be fucked up

Never say never, I guess, but I just can't see it ever coming together successfully.

I know the legal reasons it is permissible. I think that gets mentioned in just about every article about it, so most people probably know this.

I just think it is lame.

i am impressed by your musical knowledge shown in this thread.

an ABBA tour would top an original GNR tour btw ;)

this post made me think about how i regret not catching RATH with cypress hill at a small 500 seat club in western new york 1991.

escorpio 10-22-2008 08:53 PM

Slash's Snakepit was a good band, they just couldn't get past the drug and alcohol problems and make it work.

Thanks! I was just trying to give a wide variety of bands so that everyone would find a reference that works for them.

I'm glad you mentionned ABBA in there too. I wanted too but chose not because I figured people would be sarcastic about it but they were offered 1 billion for a reunion tour and they kindly refused to do it. Can you imagine 1 billion + all the merchandise money you sell at each show.. That would have been the most lucrative tour for at least the next 20 years.

Unknown fact: Abba is still to this day the best album selling band of all time. ( all their hits were recorded in Swedish, English, French, spanish, Italian, etc...) No one comes even close, not Elvis, not the Beatles, not Michael Jackson (althought he owns the record of the most sold ALBUM of all time...> Thriller with at least 100 millions copy sold to this day).
