Shaming of the 'Wild Runt' gang: Child thugs are unmasked and given ASBOs for reign of terror.

They weren't terribly brave - threatening the elderly and tearing up playing fields - and their campaign of petty vandalism and abuse was nothing if not predictable.

But for a few months a gang of children brought misery to a neighbourhood, roaming in a pack looking for their next target.

Yesterday, the dismal career of the Wild Runts, as residents came to call the gang, appeared to be at end after all nine were named and shamed and handed Anti-Social Behaviour Orders.

These youths were an absolute menace,' said a resident yesterday. 'They may look like butter wouldn't melt in their mouths but they have brought us nothing but misery.

'Some of these kids are so small some might think it unbelievable for us to be terrified of them. But they were very menacing indeed. They would wander around the estate like a pack of wild dogs. To us they were the wild runts.'

The schoolchildren, many of them with siblings, repeatedly threatened and abused residents, vandalised property, hurled bricks and lit fires.

The two girls and seven boys - all aged between 12 and 16 - tore down soil pipes, threw mud balls at windows and scratched parked cars.
