Playboy ends DVDs..

Who says the DVD market for smut is not dieing a slow death???

Quote:

Playboy Enterprises Inc, which publishes the world's most widely read adult entertainment magazine, will stop making DVDs to save about $12 million a year, and focus on distributing its content online, the company said in a regulatory filing.

Elli 10-16-2008 09:33 AM

Wow, stopping the DVDs entirely? Yikes.

TheDoc 10-16-2008 09:34 AM

Not smart... Smart would be kill off why it costs you 12m a year (what?) to make DVD's so you make more net profit..

Diversify your content, everyone should if they aren't. Even more so when you aren't able compete in the market anymore.

DarkJedi 10-16-2008 09:34 AM

thats it folks

stick a fork in it.

Part of that 12 million a year is also 80 (!!) jobs that they are getting rid of...

mvee 10-16-2008 09:39 AM

Playboy didn't support it's distributors at all. The were retailing at $19.95 while trying to charge wholesalers around $13 per unit. It made it virtually impossible to make any money on the their product.

96ukssob 10-16-2008 09:52 AM

Damn thats crazy. in all honestly, i never even knew their DVD line was that big

Andy CHOOPA 10-16-2008 09:53 AM

Sign of the times... tough

xmas13 10-16-2008 09:55 AM

Ooooooooooooopssss.

Sly 10-16-2008 09:59 AM

I don't think I've ever heard of anyone buying a Playboy DVD. I didn't even know they had a DVD line.

Makes you wonder what those 80 employees were getting done... or weren't.

Crazy.. That is more what I was meaning when I said reduce the costs to increase net profit.. jobs, warehouse, dvd covers, cost in stores, whatever it is, you reduce your costs to make net profit... fire everyone and start over if needed.

Plenty of people still doing well with DVD's, it just isn't a free for all market anymore so bloated business practices will never cut it.

Playboy is into a lot of things that no one knows about..... Starting with Spice Studios and CinemaPlay, not to mention the entire Playboy line of DVDs....

Fat Panda 10-16-2008 10:12 AM

playboy dvd's . . . . . . wtf . . . . must be pretty boring

DBS.US 10-16-2008 10:24 AM

Insane! Maybe they could contract it out to Joe Francis:winkwink:

sltr 10-16-2008 10:40 AM

what a way to run a business- 1st hire 80 people to handle DVDs, then fire them all AND stop the DVD distribution.

hahahahahahah, tards.

About time, don't you think?

alexchechs 10-16-2008 10:56 AM

This sucks for us as we did a movie for them, that was really good, and it's never gonna see the light of day...

BVF 10-16-2008 11:09 AM

Hate to say it but the focus on the internet will fail also...I can't even remember the last time I've seen a link to anything Playboy online unless it's here on gfy....

The ONLY way that I could see Playboy getting the penetration that it needs in that market is to acquire a site like Met-Art...And they would probably even fuck that up......Fuck wasting money buying the likes of gfy...You know why?....

How much more penetration online has Playboy gotten by teaming up with adult.com?....How many YEARS has it been now?...How much REAL hope do you have that adult.com will EVER bring the online empire of Playboy up to snuff?....If it hasn't happened already, it ain't happening period and that's the cold hard truth.....Did Hustler need adult.com to come online? Hell no and I've seen Hustler DVD's everywhere online.....Maybe the higher ups are playboy are handcuffing adult.com to do any real damage...I don't know because I don't work there but it's OBVIOUS that a lot of people are fucking up over there...

Also, the corporate climate is well known to be hostile in general so it will be hard to attract anyone who is capable of bringing them online.....I even remember some dude that works at Spice saying how the Playboy division looked down on them...

It's one big clusterfuck at Playboy....

Horny Dude 10-16-2008 11:09 AM

WOW....this month has been ruff for Hef. First Holly Madison leaves him and now this!

so much for creating new jobs & boosting the economy. :Oh crap

Eriic 10-16-2008 11:14 AM

It's a smart move.........

If playboy has to cut the losing part of business to refocus on the stronger sections, well that is the way it goes......

Sorry to hear that 80 people will lose their jobs, especially when the economy is weak.......

tubes/torrents...i'd agree with the statements above about diversifying...but i'm sure cutting the amount of people and materials even at a lower level just isn't profitable...they would have to charge an insane price to the loyal customers that would actually pay for it... then half end up deciding not to get it the rest will just get it off the net and the downward spiral continues til nobody buys...they are a big company and i'm sure had a team of experts make the decision for good reasons...

i would think met-art would be way out of the price range of playboy, i mean met-art must have a value of $50 million+

JP-pornshooter 10-16-2008 11:50 AM

thats a bad move, they just need to control cost better..OUTSOURCING.
DVD sales are not great but many still only have this option for watching porn.

Gret photo of you... Love that.

And I somewhat agree with that move.

d-null 10-16-2008 01:23 PM

have you ever actually watched a Playboy DVD?

they seem out of touch with what the average guy wants to see in video, they have the hottest girls, but the videos they put out on dvd are so trying to be artsy that they have more effects and cut scenes and irrelevant shots of mountains and buildings and clouds and stuff and the camera is moving so much and strange angles that you can hardly get a good look at the models...... their videos are more annoying than hot :2 cents:

it's a shame because they have access to better models than almost anyone in the world too

it figures that instead of doing them right, they'd just shitcan the whole division.

Manowar 10-16-2008 02:26 PM

this is the way they will all go soon

GetSCORECash 10-16-2008 04:08 PM

but read into the message...

DVD sales are in decline, so they are no longer going to do that part of the business. Magazine sales are in Decline so very soon.... Cable and Web is profitable so they say, and that should remain for a while.

JUST FYI: We are in need of Art Directors and Editors for our magazines, please apply at jobs at scoregroup dot com (We are profitable)

DWB 10-16-2008 04:45 PM

Playboy DVDs... I'd rather watch fags fucking.

Jim_Gunn 10-16-2008 05:06 PM

A lot of big companies, especially ones with shareholders, just don't know how to run a porn business. It takes a hands on person- not some committee- who cares about porn to make a successful business. I can think of dozens of individual guys that started back in the porn biz in the 1990's like me with nothing, and they all have profitable porn companies. But the owners of the Playboy brand and all that capital can't manage to release DVDs profitably? It boggles my mind.

slavdogg 10-16-2008 05:07 PM

Lensman should be promoted to Playboy CEO

marketsmart 10-16-2008 05:12 PM

who wants to go to a video store when you can find what you need online...

Lamis 10-16-2008 05:18 PM

Nothing New...

For some reason, 3rd world countries are more advanced than 1st world in this area.

For example, in countries like Brazil or Colombia, the Blogbusters have closed down 1 year ago, due of all the free content online.

USA is retarded in this area, lol.... I can't believe you guys still have blogbusters opened in USA... and some idiots still rent hollywood videos. funny.

What? Online quality does still not compare to DVD quality in many cases. I have downloaded shows online, burned them to DVD, and then played them on my 60 inch... it worked fine but I was not very satisfied with the quality.
