VPS or Dedicated Server?

Hi friends

I want to start a free image hosting site. Please Advise what should i do?

1- Should i go with a good VPS plan which is 80 GB HD, 2000 GB Bandwidth for 59 USD
or
2 - Should i go for a full dedicated server plans for which start at 125$ To begin with.

3- Will i have any problem if i use a VPS to begin with and then migrate to a dedicated server as an when my site grows?

Thanks
Cin

You could probably get a dedicated server for around $100. If your hosting company is willing to transfer the site for you, going from VPS to dedicated really should not be a huge issue. But, if you can afford the dedicated server now I would suggest starting out with that and avoiding the nuisance of transferring and such later.

Most importantly though, do you have a plan to monetize the traffic so that you make some money to pay for the bandwidth? I have seen a couple friends try starting similar services and they never had a plan for making money, which meant they closed up pretty quick.

Definitely VPS first.
If its not going to work out you won't loose a bunch of money on your dedi.

Most hosting providers will handle the migration from VPS to their dedicated server for you. You can also have them install a single VPS license on your dedicated server when the time comes and they can migrate your stuff pretty much with a click of the mouse, well at least some VPS software you can do that, Virtuozzo can.

VPS is a slick thing for a lot of things and should do you well IF the host you get the VPS from has setup their resources well and of course are not overselling resources on the hardware nodes. If they are promising something that sounds too good to be true, odds are it is.

Good Luck

do you realize that for the price of most of your VPS plans that one can get a decent sized, dedicated server with a few mbps for the same price or very slightly more?

Hey Cinci, hit me up on ICQ or email me and let me know the server requirements I can definitely get you a great deal on a small dedicated box.

I'd use a regular virtual host and offload images to something like Amazon S3. You'll pay for exactly what you use.
