I got a pretty sweet gift today.

I've been helping my girlfriend's blind mother learn QuickBooks Simple Start so she can do the accounting aspect of her husband's business. It took a few months and two custom applications I wrote to help with good accessibility but she sent out the invoices this month with no problems.

So, her husband swings by today and gives me a brand new Samsung 450 37" LCD TV. I couldn't believe it. I told them to pay me in sandwiches but I guess they didn't think that was enough.

I loved those people before I really love them now :thumbsup

Interesting ... and very nice of you.

(How can she check her figures for errors?)

Interesting. Can you explain the basics of how its done regarding the visual impairment issue?

Spunky 10-11-2008 06:33 PM

topteensponsors 10-11-2008 09:14 PM

Thats one hell of a thank you gift. Congrats.

fallenmuffin 10-12-2008 01:07 AM

Indeed it is. She uses a screen reader application called JAWS then I wrote a few underlaying applications to help with custom accessibility hotkeys. She can check for errors just like you would. Only instead of seeing the screen you hear it ;)

And and yes its one hell of a gift.

nice man, use it wisely (no gossip girl or 90210)

woj 10-12-2008 12:21 PM

wait a min, I don't want to be a party pooper, but a "blind accountant"? you gotta be kidding, right?

Sly 10-12-2008 12:26 PM

If you enjoyed doing that, you should seriously consider creating more applications like that for people with disabilities. Using the computer and Internet can be difficult for a lot of people with a variety of physical disabilities... they do make several programs out there to help but they are sort of created as a "one-size-fits-all" solution. Your custom solutions could really help out a lot of people.

DixieDash 10-12-2008 12:33 PM

Aw, that's sweet that you did that for her. Karma can be a great thing :) You have quite a skill and I agree with Sly, you could really help some people out.

I've been working on a small program that might be released that aids in using a mouse for the blind. As she never uses the mouse everything is accessed by hotkeys at the moment. Navigation is limited to arrowing or tabbing around. The main problem was trying to explain the environment to her. You never really have to explain "Windows" or a dialog to someone but try it sometime - it isn't easy lol. Blind users can usually handle it if they know where their limits are i.e. you can only go so far to the right or left etc. But with a multiple document interface there isn't a limitation shit just keeps opening on top of one another. So, she kept getting confused as to where she was. Its hard to explain that you did something on one dialog, closed it but are still within the program itself. She's getting it now though.

I put my old TV in the bedroom, hooked it up and told me girlfriend the same thing. The LCD isn't to be used on 90210 or One tree hill god damn it!

Hey Jarrod, sorry mate I'm pretty busy coding some stuff for myself at the moment. Yes, PHP is one language I use often. Also, I'm heading up north for a few weeks. Good luck though.

HorseShit 10-12-2008 06:44 PM
