Ohio secretary of state must verify registrations

CINCINNATI (AP) ? A federal judge on Thursday ordered Ohio's top elections official to verify the identity of newly registered voters by matching them with other government documents.

U.S. District Judge George C. Smith in Columbus ruled that Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner must perform verification required by the Help America Vote Act. That includes matching new registrants' information against information in databases maintained by the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles or the Social Security Administration.

The order was the result of a lawsuit the Ohio Republican Party filed against Brunner, a Democrat.

"Plaintiffs assert, and the court agrees, that it is hard to imagine a public interest more compelling than safeguarding the legitimacy of the election of the president of the United States," Smith wrote in his ruling.

Brunner also was ordered to establish a process by which Ohio's 88 county election boards can access information generated by the checks.

There is only one week left to verify registration before the absentee ballots get opened. Once the ballots are open they are fair game since they become "anonymous" votes once out of the envelope. So this injunction forces Ohio to go thru all the names and double cross check the names to ensure no false or fraud votes. Brunner is being accused of slacking on the cross check and lets false voters through.

Its going to get nasty the next month.

I foresee a major breach after a network hack once they figure out how they will allow local areas access to the information.

Yeah thats just one thing that could turn the story in another direction.

Good time to be a lawyer. Both sides are going to be lawyering up in most battleground states for the next couple months.

Other then Jayman Cash and 3xTom is there anything Ohio can do right?

I really don't see this as a big issue because the knucklehead dirty shit like this (that happens in EVERY election on BOTH sides BTW) only matters in a really close race.

This one isn't going to be close.

So what's wrong with just having the voters provide ID at time of voting? That too complicated for the Republicans?

Ah, my bad. I could have sworn I saw a job resume listing of yours awhile back that said you from Ohio. The point stands, whatever state it was... :winkwink:

So, that does leave only 2 good things about Ohio, and now 1 good thing about Kentucky! :winkwink:

Supreme Court reversed this decision btw. No cross database verification needed.
