My fellow Canadistanis, have you reg'd your phone # with the DO NO CALL list yet?

I don't know if this has been posted already or not, don't really care. I doubt it can be overposted. Yes, I'm talking about telemarketers, and eliminating a good chunk of the more annoying ones from calling you ever again.

Here's the link:
https://www.lnnte-dncl.gc.ca/index-eng

Registering a phone # takes about 30 seconds. It takes a month for it to go into full effect.

Quote:

Do not expect calls to stop immediately.

Telemarketers have up to 31 days to update their lists and to make sure they do not call you. You could still receive calls within those first 31 days.

Registering on the National Do Not Call List (DNCL) will not eliminate all telemarketing calls. There are exemptions within the Rules that may allow calls from organizations such as charities, those with whom you have existing business relationships, political parties and newspapers.

You can further reduce unwanted telemarketing calls by asking these organizations to place your number(s) on their own do not call list.
I just reg'd mine and my parent's #'s. What the hell it's free.

Title should read DO NOT CALL list.

dready 10-09-2008 10:06 AM

Finally.

Yeah I tried the day it launched, but had to do it the second day.

I really hate to be the guy to give you all bad news, but most of the telemarketing is not done from Canada. The fines don't scare most of the companies because they'll never end up paying them anyway.

All I see the DNC list as being is a valid list of phone numbers for shady telemarketers to use.

I'll beg to differ, if only from the perspective of being in Canada I get about roughly 40-50% of telemarketing calls from Canadian area codes. Specifically Ontario and Manitoba.

Actually Winnipeg has several major call centers located here.

Give it a couple or three months and I'll let you know what changes if any this has had. Hey it can't hurt to register can it?

Mark_E4A 10-09-2008 12:43 PM

oh helll ya, fucking telemarketers

all damn automated now, cant even yell at them anymore...

Twistys Tim 10-09-2008 12:51 PM

Already done! I fucking hate those mother fuckers who call just after my son has gone to bed asking if I want my ducts cleaned, or a fucking credit card!

BlackCrayon 10-09-2008 01:03 PM

I have doubts it will change anything. I get calls on a regular basis from phone numbers like 000-000-0000. It doesn't seem like those kinds of companies are following the law to begin with.

LadyMischief 10-09-2008 01:24 PM

You betcha!! :)

Tempest 10-09-2008 02:38 PM

For years now I've kept my phone numbers unlisted and blocked and the only calls I've ever received have been from CIBC trying to flog me some insurance or shit (I have a Visa Card thru CIBC) and awhile ago some group in the US got my number and so I get a call from them every few months or so... But that's it..

So no, I don't think I'll put my numbers on the do not call list so that others can find my number.

cool1 10-09-2008 02:45 PM

I never get any calls like that
but registered my number anyways.
ya never know when they might start calling.

evildick 10-09-2008 02:52 PM

I regd but I find most of my calls are from charities anyway, which are exempt. Won't hurt though. Hopefully it blocks The Police Association.

I get quite a few calls from that number as well.
