Kimbo wasn't expecting a punch ... Proof of fixed ("favorable") fight!

Seth Petruzelli, after going from nobody to national celebrity for punching out Kimbo Slice, went on the radio Monday. He delivered a shot potentially more powerful than anything he threw Saturday.

He said his original plan against Kimbo was to get him to the ground and exploit his weak wrestling skills and submission defense. It made more sense than trading punches with a street brawler who outweighed him by 30 pounds. Petruzelli said he changed his mind though.

?The promoters kind of hinted to me, and they gave me the money to stand and trade with him,? he told ?The Monsters in Orlando? radio show. ?They didn?t want me to take him down, let?s just put it that way. It was worth my while to try to stand up and punch with him.?

The quote spoke of an attempt to if not rig the fight, then make it favorable for Slice, the main star and cash cow of the EliteXC promotion.

Such an action would be a disaster for mixed martial arts as it attempts to convince mainstream audiences it isn?t scripted pro wrestling or a farcical Toughman contest. If EliteXC gave Petruzelli money to fight one way, it would open itself to all sorts of investigations.

uh oh

not good for the sport.

Seems they forgot to tell him to STFU about the conversation. Or he does not have the sense to realise the impact of his little comment on the radio. Either way, the failure to contain the information is on their heads, not his.

Okay so they fixed the fight agaisn't Kimbo that means ? Basic laws of economics tells me otherwise.

lazycash 10-08-2008 12:20 PM

Don't think I would use the word "fixed" for that, but obviously they wanted an exciting fight and possible kimbo knockout. Don't think Seth was too smart to reveal what EliteXc told him as I'm sure he wants a big money title defense.

Rodent 10-08-2008 12:30 PM

Yea they forgot to tell him to shut his face :1orglaugh

I thought the same about shamrock. I am willing to bet the told shamrock he would get a bonus if he stood and traded punches with kimbo instead of taking him to the ground.

Seth has actually come out and corrected this statement.

He was told he would be given a bonus for knockout, whether standing or on the ground.

Asking or paying Seth to keep it standing isn't fixing the fight. Seth is a striker, the odds of him taking to the ground was highly unlikely anyway. EliteXC has always been sort of a joke/circus, no shocker there.

What is the best MMA tournament?

Bojangles 10-08-2008 02:21 PM

I'm not surprised.

They shouldn't have to tell him to shut his face. They shouldn't be doing it.

It should get exposed, cleaned out, next thing we know it's going to be 3 minute speeches about how they are going to crush someone with some special ending moves that always work.

if you read other MMA blogs and sites. He also retracted that statement saying the promoters never SAID to go stand up, he just 'knew' that is what they wanted.
