when you are in business, what you learn about the average person

i was reading this article about the palin debate and this jumped out at me:

"In another experiment, Simons stopped people on the street and asked for directions. Halfway through the answer, he arranged for two men carrying a door to walk between him and the person giving the answer. After the door passed by, Simons was gone -- and one of the people carrying the door was standing in his place. Half the time, people did not notice the person they were talking to had changed."

it just reinforces the notion that most, 90% of people just breeze through life, not particularly focused one one particular subject or the other. the most important things could be paying the mortgage and the kids grades, other things may just not be important to them, they procrastinate, dont pay attention to detail, do what is intuitive and quick, etc.

its interesting what you learn about this human behavior. the reasons behind why some people dont uncheck a crossell, making price points an off #?s (rather than 29.99, make it 28.57, to make it blend in with other purchases that had the tax added, or making 40.00 charges ATMbill, etc), even the basic rebilling model.

i always believed tha skill or rhetoric was the most valuable one you could acquire. You can see this with politicians soundbites every day, I remember dark jedi posting some time back something like ?90% of people are sheep. But watch out for the other 10%"

interesting stuff

I believe you on the whole rhetoric thing.

I used to work in an office, and there was this guy who ruled the whole place because he was good at rhetoric -- which to me, is a euphamism for bullshit. Smooth talkers can do anything, because BS is all most people want to hear.

If you're like me, and have a super strong bullshit detector, and don't like to dish it out also, you don't do well in office situations.

Right on the mark

Example, what do you generally know about surfers:

They purchase when they get home in the late afternoon evening throughout to about midnight.
They are more likely to buy thur-sun, rather than during the week
Winter months are better than summer months

And so on

bump for after the debate

yeah it is pretty fascinating stuff.

the reason why Bill Clinton is still so damn popular.

Wall Street take people's cash and give them debt. It's the American Mafia gambling/loan sharking business multiplied by 100 000, and it's all legal.

Long live gambling and usury!!!!!!!

actually I dont see how you can call this "rhetoric" For some things, some companies, this may be able to be proven though stats.

i jumped around a bit :) i guess my point was 2 parts, where the first is you determine the characteristics of your audience, then you use methods like rhetoric to get your message to them
