The Suffering of Being a Cubs fan

Last night I went to see my beloved Chicago Cubs take on the Los Dodgers in the playoffs. I have been a Cubs fan my entire life and this was the first time I have seen them in the post season. I went to the game with my buddy Shameless; this was the fourth time I have been to a Dodgers game this year. The other times I went with Andrea Anderson, Lexi Belle and Kenzi Marie, I have to admit he was my favorite ?date?. It was nice to go a game with someone who understands the sport, even if he is a Dodgers fan.

We got to the game a little late with the idea of scalping tickets. I have scalped tickets for countless events and have learned you get the best deal right after the game starts. Well last night we couldn?t find a scalper. When we finally did we made a great deal two field level seats for $200. I was beyond happy and we walked to the gates. The lady scanned our tickets?.they were fakes! We had been scammed. The lady said there were a lot of fake tickets and to go to main office and see if they could help us. We went to the main office and I pleaded our case; I didn?t tell them I bought them from scalper for obvious reason. The lady at the office was very nice and got her manger who told us she was sorry there was nothing she could do. She did have some good news, as just released extar tickets, but they were expensive. I asked her how much and she said $126 each. I told her I didn?t care I was a lifelong fan and just wanted to see the game. We bought the tickets went inside and got a couple beers.

We went to our seats and they were ten rows from the field right behind home plate. These seats were unreal! I was so happy, even though the Cubs were losing 2 to 0. I thought they would rally and win; I was surrounded by Dodger fans and have to give them credit as all 56,000 people in the stadium were completely into the game. It was a completely different atmosphere than the game I went to two weeks ago with Kenzi. I was probably the most vocal Cubs fan there, much to the displeasure of Shameless. I have a problem cussing at games and I think I made the man with no shame blush. The Dodgers went on score another run to make it 3 to 0. The Cubs rally I was praying for never happened, and they lost 3 to 1.

When Soriano struck out I thought I was going to cry. I drowned my sorrows in beer, as Rick and I went out and got drunk at Winston?s in Hollywood. I am so hung over and sad today. To make things worse Man City was up 2 to 0 then fell apart and lost to Liverpool 3 to 2. The only good news is that The Redskins won to improve to 4 to 1. 1 out of 3 will get you in the hall of fame in baseball, so maybe it?s a sign from God that next year will be our year.

Tough year. So much potential and it all went to hell.

I'm a Cubs lifer so I feel your pain.

But when you look at the numbers, two years in a row our players just don't hit under post season pressure. I don't know what to do next year but we need some new bats. Pitching staff is good, but we need a new lineup and not many people are available.

I feel your pain, Dan!
I too am a long time Cubs fan, from back in the day when WGN got all over cable, in the early 80's!

I even made the trip to "OPENING NIGHT UNDER THE LIGHTS @ WRIGLEY FIELD" back in 1988!

This was a brutal playoff series, to be sure!

Ha, the first night game. That was awesome. If you ever get a chance to see the WGN broadcast from that night, check it out. It's classic. Harry Caray thinks something is wrong because of all the "flashing lights" around the stadium. Then Steve Stone informs Harry that those are just camera flashes. It's classic Harry Caray for the first 15 minutes or so. You couldn't make a parody that was as good as that.

Yeah I have to admit it was one of my better dates too :winkwink: Dan & a baseball game, I'll be hard pressed to top that (lol) We seriously had a great time. It was one of those spur of the moment just roll with the punches kinda evening. After the game Dan was seriously going to die if he didn't get a drink so we headed over to this place called the Griffin in Atwater Village which is a super fun little hole in the wall. Then got a call from my boy Henry to come check out the bar he works at in Hollywood which was a blast. Ran into Antoni Hardonk who will be fighting again in the UFC on Dec 27th & got invited out to see him fight. That's always a great thing, all in all had an amazing evening. Even the part where I made our 3rd friends date cry, the evening was a blast.

I just want to thank Dan for not putting out, it means so much more to me to have this be special as he said and not jump into anything (lol)

The Cubs haven't won a playoff game since the Bartman incident. As if they didn't have enough curses, now it seems Bartman really put one on them. I feel for them.

stevo 10-06-2008 12:29 AM

I feel like crying. Another year down the tube, but i still love 'em! :helpme I guess there's just too much pressure, with it being 100 years since winning.

Things should get interesting soon, with the buyout. It would be cool if Mark Cuban comes over and invests some big time money into the team. :winkwink:

Jago Webcams 10-06-2008 03:57 AM

I feel your pain Dan. 9 straight playoff losses :( Will the misery ever end??

On a side note, same thing happened to me this year. I bought courtside seats to a basketball game earlier this year that were duplicates.

LOL!
What's hilarious to me is MY situation.
The first night game 8-8-88 there, I was IN Chicago...but could not get tix.
That night's game got rained out (with limo's and celebrities in tow!)...after 3 (?) innings.
BUT, I did have tix for 8-9-88 and THAT became the first OFFICIAL night game! Had seats about 25 rows up right along 1st base! Can't beat that!

Oh those Cubbies I was just a kid back in 1969 when talk was high of a Cubs World Series probably, only to have them collapse to the Mets (the eventual Series winner), in the 80's was another disappointment. Moved to Atlanta in the 90's to witness what was some of the biggest playoff collapses with the Braves, Thought the 100 year anniversary was our year, but again we're left holding the bag. But as only true Cub fans will say "wait until next year" in the words of our beloved Harry Carey "HOLY COW"

cwd 10-06-2008 07:32 AM

The best thing about the Cubs fans that I know is that they never give up. Thats gotta say something right there!

Supz 10-07-2008 11:26 AM

I am a Mets fan, top that, 2 years of "Best team in the NL" bullshit and they choke at the end.

NETBilling-Andy 10-07-2008 11:41 AM

I am a die hard Cubs fan as many friends in the industry know. I've got hundreds of Cubs autographs in my office, jerseys, bats, original photo's from the 36 world series, way more money invested than would be considered healthy. But being a Cubs fan with all my stuff is really like being in a bad marriage with kids. You're miserable and want to bail out, but you're stuck. I could no more stop being a Cubs fan than I could stop breathing. It just seems to hurt more and more every time. 2003 was about as painful as I can remember though. I sat for an hour in the dark after game 7 with my head down in complete misery. I've been in a real bad mood the whole past week now. It's usually about this time of year, I hate being a Cubs fan. I'll NEVER FORGIVE YOU BARTMAN!! haha

NETBilling-Andy 10-07-2008 11:42 AM

I need therapy now

Or the Seattle Mariners..this year.. or last year.. or the year before..

..

As for the Cubs.. I would have loved to see Lou get to the Series..even though he's been away from the Ms for years.

NETBilling-Andy 10-07-2008 11:47 AM

I also went to the Tuesday game that officially became the first night game after the rain out on Monday. That was really cool.

mozadek 10-07-2008 11:48 AM

Dan, months ago I remember telling you the Cubs wont do anything in the playoffs and they had their chance in 2003. Told you so :)
