My Canon 5D died today.
 

I've easily put 700,000 images through it and I think it's rated for about 150k so I'm not surprised. I knew it was starting to wear down a bit but was hoping it would last until the 5D Mark II comes out. Thank God for back up camera bodies. :)

What really sucks is that I am used to shooting with a full frame camera and now I have to re-adapt to the 20, 30, or 40D for two weeks until Canon gets the 5D repaired.

Poor me. :disgust

I wish my old JVC digital cam would crap out so I would have an excuse to buy a new one.....However, It's been going strong for over 8 years.

I just bought myself a new kick around compact digital camera (okay.. all I shoot are pics of the grandbaby). I got a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5... Looked at a few SLRs but.. I'm no pro ;)

We had to send our 1d in a few months back. It was way over the 150k mark too. Shutter finally gave out.

Didn't the 50d just come out? I'm either going for that or the 5d :)

Not enough memory for a full day of shooting.

50D is supposed to hit the stores this month. It's cool and all but it's not a full frame camera. The 5D Mark II comes out in November and I'll most likely pre-order one then use the 5D as my backup.

It's similar to comparing 35mm to medium format. They don't compare at all.

A 5D with a full frame gives you much shallower DOF, whereas the 50D gives you all the same functions - but with a 1.6 multiplier effect. This essentially gives you less freedom when it comes to making your stuff look really damn good. It makes your 35mm lens equivalent to a 50mm, and a 24mm lens equivalent to a 35mm, etc.

Also, the larger sensor on the 5D gives you larger pixels making for a higher quality image as well.

The one benefit to going with the 50D is the gapless pixel sensor. I believe that will give a bit of a cleaner image.

I bet you have the best roi on a 5D of anyone in the world.

Despite our mutual dislike - I have to sympathise whenever a primary camera is down for repairs.

I hate having to re-adapt shooting techniques even for short terms.

My latest technique is shoot a dozen frames with the 'ole e10 - then grab the d80 and shoot a few dozen more while the e10 is writing. :winkwink:
