Al Davis = cancer of the Raiders

Being a lifetime Broncos fan, the AFC West is near and dear to me. With that said, I am tired of that senile, old-as-dirt, cancerous growth that is Al Davis. The guy micro-manages his team to the point of futility as he has no idea about how football has evolved in the last 20 years.

The silver and black are going to continue to be nothing until he is gone. :2 cents:

sltr 10-01-2008 07:28 AM

i'd think, as abroncos fan you'd want him around so y'all can keep beating them. !

I am a lifetime Broncos fan as well but watching that senile old fuck completely destroy the Raiders has gotten old. The league needs to step in. :2 cents:

Raiders? They left LA years ago, they might as well not exist.

Never trust a pirate.

You're just now figuring this out?

he's been doing that for ~50 years and a handfull of superbowls.

sltr 10-01-2008 08:45 AM

also- the overall record between the raiders & broncos, is 54-39-2, with the Raiders holding the lead.

I am not disputing that Al Davis used to be effective. I am talking about his destruction of the team over the last 10 years.

they went to the super bowl 6 years ago, 11-5 the season after that- all certainly due to gruden's work as head coach

if anything, imo, it's the choice of coaches recently that al davis has fucked up on.

callahn? rode the coattails of gruden.

art shell? please.

kiffin? tbd.

I am a lifelong Raider fan and I have to agree with you. Davis still thinks it is 1979 and he thinks if you get the fastest wide receivers and a good running back you will just run past everyone. The game has changed and slower teams now have ways to combat speed. Davis doesn't seem to know that.

It saddens me to see how they have fallen off and I have to agree with you that they will continue to suck as long as he is at the helm. if he were to step down, hire a GM And let him get a coach that they actually stuck with for more than a couple of years and Al stayed out of things they could return to what they once were. Somehow, however, I doubt he will do that any time soon.

Actually.....Davis is great at spotting young coaching talent.

He used to be the young coaching talent. He took over the Raiders in what was basically a coup, and he's scared to death of the same thing happening to him.....that's why he won't keep a coach around very long......he doesn't want them becoming too "powerful". Also why he likes to pick the young guys who will take his shit and live with the limited power because they want to get their first head coaching gig. Oakland is the worst head coaching job in the league and there isn't a coach in the league who would tell you different.

Two of the guys you mentioned were just fill ins I believe. Kiffin was run out of town in much the same way as Mike Shannahan......last time I checked, Shannahan did ok for himself after he left the Raiders.

i don't disagree with that. my point was that even though he is a *hands-on* owner, the raiders have still shown up throughout the years, except for the last several seasons which, imo, can be attributed to his choices in coaches- primarily the fill-in callahan and the wtf were you thinking art shell, neither one is a youngster.

but come to think of it, the raiders are either flying high or in the toilet, lolz, rarely a middle of the road team.

either way, i've liked the raiders a lot ever since i went to college & worked in the east bay back in the day.

Hands on owners almost never work out.

Jerry Jones thought he was smarter than Jimmy Johnson......then finally wised up and gave control to Bill Parcells, who built his current juggernaut. It remains to be seen how they'll do long term with Jerry as the official GM.

Dan Snyder finally seems to have wised up and is letting the football people run the operation...at least this year. His drunken sailor spending sprees didn't win Washington any playoff games.

The only hands-on owner who ever accomplished anything was Steinbrenner, but when you can spend twice as much as any other team, that makes it alot easier.

Unfortunately Raider fans are just gonna have to wait for Davis to die or at least become "officially" senile and lose control of the team.

I'm a Dolphins fan and my owner is the EXACT opposite of Al Davis. He's totally hands off....which is great when Don Shula or Jimmy Johnson are running your team, but really sucks ass when Dave Wannstedt or Cam Cameron are running your team.

Dont worry he wont be around that much longer. Him and Mccain can share a spot.

there was a show on HBO over the last part of this summer that was an inside look at the cowboys pre-season training- it was titled "hard knocks"

i was amazed at how much jones is still hands-on. it was a great show and i hate the cowboys/jones.

there was a scene where they were contemplating starting spots and jones basically decided on his own and looked around the room for agreement to everyone BUT phillips, then you can see the look on his face when he realizes he never looked at philips then looks over to him and says "coach, that ok with you?" lolololol, classic.

I haven't seen this year's hard knocks....I cancelled HBO :(

I saw it last year though...it was the Kansas City Chiefs, and I think the year before that it was the Ravens.

Interesting show for football junkies...even though you wish it was your team they were doing it on.

And yeah, Wade Phillips is just a placeholder for Jason Garrett, which I guess he's ok with because nobody thought he'd ever be a head coach again anyways....but now he might get another shot once the Cowboys let him go.

Al Davis sucks.. I agree he is the mismanaging cancer of the Raiders.. I'm a long time raiders fan and I wish him and his son would fall off the face of the earth and let someone else come in and make better decisions for the franchise..

i see, i haven't had hbo for awhile now, i liked it. i was wondering during the show how much they are paying garrett, and for how long- it has to be a ridiculous amount + he has to believe they are going to the super bowl this year.

It's in the $3M per year range, he's the highest paid assistant in the NFL. He apparently also has an implicit guarantee that he will be the next Cowboys head coach, whenever they part ways with Wade Phillips.

He was interviewed for the Ravens and Falcons openings this past offseason and later withdrew his name from consideration.....must be nice to have a star shining that bright......he could already be an NFL head coach but he's just going to collect his $3M per year for calling plays and then take over one of the most storied, and definitely the richest franchise in the NFL.
