OT a pet question dog people inside
I asked this on a boston board but they are 9 to 5ers so not a soul there so taking a shot here.
Shorty my 6 yr old boston had two pimple like bumps on his head. one looked swollen and made his eye look puffy. I take him to the Doc and he says looks like a infected bug bite or he got into something like a prickly bush. He tells me to give him 1 zeinqin a day. I gave him one later that night and a little while later he seemed very droopy. In the morning I call the vet because he seems very listless. He says it the drug and its ok. Had some business to take care of, when I got home. He looked worse even more listless, just standing around and wouldn't eat a snack he loves. So I call the doc he isnt in,so another vet is there and says bring him in. We go in his temp is 103 and she says he must be having a reaction to the med. Dont give him anymore and start the new one tomorrow but for the swollen lid you can give him half a bendryl. I gave it to him and now he just sleeping on my bed. I call him he barely lifts his head. I will have to take him back to the vet if he is still like that. Does any one know how long zeinqin stays in his system? Ive also never gave him bendryl before would it make him so tried? |
benedryl makes them tired as well. When my dog got stung by a bee. I was told to give him childrens benedryl or half of an adult one. She was out for a few hrs. Though when she got fixed and put under, she wasnt loopy at all right afterwards. Some meds just react with each animal differently. I would say get a second opinion.

Dayum, that sucks. Do you think it's possible that he got bit by a spider?

Benedryl can make dogs really tired. Both of my dogs take it for allergies, and they were exhausted the first few days on it. Below is what I could find on that drug.
More Information on Zeniquin Brand Name Zeniquin (Pfizer Animal Health) Generic Name marbofloxacin What is the most important information I should know about Zeniquin: Zeniquin is a prescription medication FDA approved for veterinary use in cats and dogs. Zeniquin is available as 25mg, 50mg and 100mg film-coated scored tablets. Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your veterinarian. Do not give Zeniquin to any pet other than the pet for whom it was prescribed. Zeniquin is not for use in animals allergic to it or other floroquinolone antibiotic drugs. Zeniquin should not be used in cats younger than 12 months of age or dogs during their rapid growth phase which can vary from 8 to 18 months based on the size of the breed. Zeniquin may affect the retina of cats. What is Zeniquin: Zeniquin is a broad spectrum oral floroquinolone antibiotic used for the treatment of bacterial infections such as skin and soft-tissue infections and urinary tract infections due to susceptible organisms. This medication may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this guide. What should I discuss with my veterinarian before giving Zeniquin to my pet: Tell your veterinarian if your pet has seizures or other central nervous system (CNS) disorders, or if the pet is breeding, pregnant or lactating. How should this medication be given: Give this medication exactly as directed by your veterinarian. Give all of the medication your veterinarian has prescribed. Symptoms may start to improve before the infection is completely treated. The usual dose of Zeniquin for dogs and cats is 1.25mg per pound given once a day, but the dosage may be increased to 2.5mg per pound. Treatment should continue for a maximum of 30 days, however, if there is no improvement after 5 days the pet should be reevaluated. If you do not understand the directions ask the pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you. Store Zeniquin at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep this medication away from children and pets. What happens if I miss giving a dose: Give the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the dose missed and give only the next regularly scheduled dose. Do not give a double dose of the medication. What happens if I overdose the pet: Seek emergency veterinary medical treatment. Symptoms of overdose may include loss of appetite, vomiting, dehydration, excessive salivation, tremors, reddened skin, or facial swelling. What should I avoid while giving Zeniquin to my pet: Do not use Zeniquin in animals allergic to it or other floroquinolone antibiotics. Do not give Zeniquin within 2 hours of (Carafate (sucralfate), or other antacids or foods and supplements containing iron, aluminum, calcium, magnesium, and zinc. Do not give Zeniquin with vitamin/mineral products. What are the possible side effects of Zeniquin: Stop giving the medication and seek emergency veterinary medical attention if your pet experiences an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue or face; or hives). Other less serious side effects may also occur. Continue to give the medication and talk to your veterinarian if your pet experiences loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness or drowsiness. Side effects other than those listed may occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome to the pet. What other drugs will affect Zeniquin: Drugs other than those listed may also interact with Zeniquin. Talk to your veterinarian or pharmacist before giving any prescription or over the counter medications. Where can I get more information: Your pharmacist has additional information about Zeniquin written for health professionals that you may read. |
thank's jane i saw that but it doesnt say how long it lasts in the body or now its just maybe the bendryl at this point.

Aw the poor little guy! Since he's so small, it might have been a big dose for him. Let him sleep it off and if he's still listless in the morning, call a diff vet for another opinion.
|
Even half a benadryl is a lot for a dog. I take one tablet and I get tired, and I'm 200 lbs. So half of one for a dog would be like me taking 4, even more relative to a smaller dog.
If he's really listless, make sure to bring some water by him and hold it by his mouth in case he wants to drink. When dogs are tired like that they won't walk to get water no matter how thirsty they are. Hope everything works out for your pooch. |

I looked all over the place and it does not say anywhere how long it stays in their system. You could try calling an animal hospital and ask them or a 24 hour pharmacy. I hope that he feels better soon. Poor little guy. :( |

i feel for ya, i hate it when one of my animals gets sick, i probably spend more on the vet tha i do at the doctor :-(
seems the shit always hits the fan on weekends when the vet is closed |
How long it takes for the zeniquin to clear his system depends on the dosage and the dog's weight, but from what I can find online half life averages between 9 and 10 hours so it should be mostly gone from his blood stream within 24 hours.
|
he is sleeping now, I got him to go out to take a whiz its like he is drugged. The doc said I could give him up to 25 mg of bendryl, I only gave him a half. I tried to give him water he wont drink but his gums are pink. if in the morning he is still not right its back to the vet. I will keep you guys posted thanks

Whooohoo.. doggie sleepin on daddy's bed tonight!
Hope all is back to normal in the morning |
my frenchbulldog had the exact same problem..bump on his head, swollen face + eyes.
Anyway before i got to the vet he told me to give half a dose of benadryl and it did infact make the swelling go down but made him a little sleepy. It was when my dog took Zeniquin that he had the same symptoms as yours. loss of appetite lathargy couldnt hold his urine down after that i went to a 24 hour animal hospital and the monitored him over night. They also told me that benadryl is relatively safe for dogs and is actually recommended for you to carry it around just in case your dog gets a serious allergic reaction. Sure enough over night my dog started to slowly get back to normal. Hope everything turns out ok for shorty |
Well, for starters 103 temp is normal for a dog. So nothing to worry about there.
|
i have 2 mutts both over 70 pounds and a half dose of benadryl can knock them out for half a day or more
water if you can it it in him will help flush the system 2nd opinions are good hoping you will have good news and a happy puppy soon! |
They had me give Benadryl to my 80 pound husky/shepherd mix when he needed bloodwork done because it worked like valium on him. Just made him real mellow. He was abused before I got him so we were afraid that he would freak about being held still for a needle and didnt want to traumatize him by muzzling him.
