Miami in Los Angeles. Any locations in LA look like Miami?
I'm editing a DVD from a director in Miami. He just came out with a girl from the movie and after seeing my work is wanting me to shoot the DVD box cover.
The movie was shot entirely in Miami, and so I would want to capture a Miami look and feel. The girls don't necessarily need to be nude but definitely in bikinis. He wants the main guy in the middle with the 2 girls on either side of him. I can shoot it, I just need to find a good location. Anyone know of a place that looks a little like Miami, but is in LA? I was thinking it would end up being a beach shot, but if no suitable location is found we'll shoot on a small stage with white BG and just go for a collage. |
Why not by a pool with some palm trees ?
;-) |
Must be somewhere, because CSI:Miami is filmed in LA.

However, the movie is sort of an adult crime drama. I'm thinking more of a miami vice type feel. The pool and palms would normally be a perfect ide. :):thumbsup |
RedShoe., Get yourself a Hot car, like a old Ferrari or something like that. Back it up to the front of an office building some place and shoot there.

I was thinking of a beach type setup. But I can dig this too. :) |
Where do the Cubans live in LA? There MUST be a little Havana there somewhere.
Also depends if you want that Art Deco vibe or slummy ghetto look. |
I can call Don Johnson for you. Maybe he can stand in the back ground.
Or you can just go to the Don Johnson adult toy factory near your house and shoot there. Almost as good as the real thing! |
just shoot her at the beach, and make sure no surfers, mountains or rocks are visible.

Look over by Marina Penninsula or down toward Manhattan Beach. I think Venice's strip could look somewhat like Ocean in MIA if you shot it correctly.
|
There are plenty of ways to tell an east coast beach from a west coast beach so unless you shoot at the waters edge with the water in the background something is going to give it away. If you want to fool everyone, the pool and palm tree or hot car by a mansion is a better idea.

I know just about every area of L.A. and that's a tough call. Architecturally I can't think of a thing, but here are some thoughts...
If you do a beach shoot keep the water in the distance as the Pacific ocean is brownish and the Atlantic and Gulf are blue. If you use a Ferrari as someone suggested, be sure and remove the license plates. Santa Monica probably has the widest beaches, more along Miami's depth. Those lifeguard towers are very much identified with Cali though, probably due to Baywatch. Avoid anything iconic like muscle beach, the Venice boardwalk or the beach bicycle/roller skate path. Also, someone mentioned finding little Havana in L.A. To the best of my knowledge there is none. This answer is making me very homesick :( |

Red, try down here in Long Beach, a little south of downtown area along Ocean Blvd / Belmont Shore area or even further south than that you might the backdrop you're looking for
|
Another thing to consider is the sunlight.
If you shoot late afternoon at the beach in Cali it would be seen as an early morning scene in Miami. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Light direction is another clue that can give the picture away. |
CSI Miami is shot here in Hermosa, Manhattan & El Segundo. You can get that golden sun look shooting in the afternoon. The other place they like to shoot is at the Roosevelt Hotel pool.

funny thread..lol

Check out shooting locations for Showtime's Dexter -- a crime series that takes place in Miami, but all of it is shot in LA. The first episode of this season featured a slummy neighborhood with palm trees and chain link fences that would be perfect. :2 cents:

CSI NY is shot in Long Beach, with a bit of downtown LA for good measure. I think they're all shot here with a bit of stock footage and a couple of seasonal trips to do specific outdoor shoots. ICQ me if you need some help figuring out where they shoot, I'm sure we can ask a couple of people and get some location addresses.

Scarface was set in Miami -- but was shot in LA, mostly Venice beach and area. CSI Miami is shot in LA, with the exception of exterior shots, which are shot in Miami.

You could do a pool with some cabana's and give the Niki Beach feel. The Vice Roy in Santa Monica or the pool on top of the http://www.raffles.com/en_ra/property/rle just make sure you don't get mountains or the hollywood sign in the background on that one! Maybe you could photoshop a miami backdrop in.
