Question for video pros: Final Cut Pro or Vegas?
I have been using Vegas for years. On the PC it kicks Premiere's ass. Instant rendering previews, intuitive editing, etc.
But, I've been using a 17" Mac as my main compter this week and I think I'm falling in love. I don't want to have to dual boot or run Parralels for my main programs. How is Final Cut compared to Vegas? Is it worth switching for? |
Most of Hollywood uses FCP.
|
Yeah, and most of the music biz uses Pro Tools, but it's not because it's better than Logic, it's just a habit that developed over years and the native files are easy to transfer from studio to studio for multiple editors/engineers to work on if needed.
I'm not transferring files to multiple people so that's not a factor. I'm wondering which one is better from single people's independent opinions. |

To be successful, imitate what successful people do. I think Hollywood is pretty successful at making movies. |

You are smoking crack. Dude, I am looking at 32 platinum plaques on my wall. I can tell you for sure that Logic is on par if not better, it's just not a standard because just about all the engineers and producers have learned to use Pro Tools since it became dominant first. |
Final Cut....i've used Vegas too, but nothing beats the quality you get outta FCP.

No, it's the one that became dominant in the early 90's so everyone learned it and became familiar. Have you ever tried to take a Pro Tools session to one pro studio to another? Worrying about compatible file formats isn't something you want to do at $100 an hour. Especially considering a lot of them don't have engineers that are Logic proficient. Sometimes even old PT files or Windows PT files don't come up correctly. So, to keep everything running smoothly people just stick to PT. Not because it's better but because it's what everyone knows and is prepared for due to the act that everyone is PT capable and has been since at least '93. Feature for feature it's not better but for universal acceptance it kills Logic and that matters a ton in pro enviroments. |
Im a vegas guy but if you go to forums some love it some dont some left to fcp some came from fcp. Its a individual thing, I would think it would run better than vegas simply because the company that makes it, makes the os and the machine it runs on.The nice thing about fcp its a skill that translates to the mainstream world where vegas doesnt.

How hard would it be for me to get into FCP? Is the learning curve high even for people who mastered Premiere and Vegas or are some of the processes similar? |
if you have an apple FCP
if not Vegas Vegas can do anything FCP can do and it can do it just as well, just as fast and in some cases, better and it will save you big bucks...specially if you are cutting HD |

Most of Hollywood DOES NOT use FCP. They use AVID. Indie studios and semi-pros use FCP. |
