Question about MMA fights.

Love watching this stuff and have since they used to do the early UFC all day battles that were available on satellite tv ppv, where even nut punches were still allowed.

Was watching one of the Dream matches a few days ago and I was wondering after seeing one judge wipe blood off one fighters face and then also use same towel on another fighters cut face.

Are MMA fighters tested for STD's etc that can be transferred by blood?
Also curious due to Tito and well his wife's issues ya know.

TimBlaze 09-28-2008 08:35 PM

yeah so are pro wrestlers

All professional MMA fighters are tested for infectious disease. In fact, the CASC canceled Aleks Emelianko's fight last month for Affliction due to his blood test coming back positive for Hepatitis.

Thanks Anthony, figured they would but you know.

So what gives if you end up with hep b?

If you have any infectious disease, the fight is canceled.

Turboface 09-28-2008 08:49 PM

Ya, they get tested. They have to with some of the blood baths that happen.

Which fight were you watching the other night? The Rampage vs Tim Silva fight?

After Shock Media 09-28-2008 08:51 PM

ya it was Rampage and Silva where they were wipping each guys faces with same rag.

Oh and since I have this MMA topic going. Why do I never see many of those fighters outside of Dream fights? I really do not follow the politics and who owns what etc.

Exception being Crocop I have seen loose in UFC.

marketsmart 09-28-2008 08:57 PM

UFC owns Pride and WEC....

Still does not exactly answer the question though.

DREAMS is the new incarnation of the now defunct PRIDE FC.

There alot of MMA Orgs now, but the main ones are still UFC, DREAMS, SPIRIT, AFFLICTION, and WEC. There are a few in Russia, but I can't for the life of me remember them.

Can't forget EliteXC. Speaking of, Kimbo is fighting this weekend!

Can't wait.

After Shock Media 09-28-2008 09:05 PM

Who is Kimbo fighting this time?
Anyone with any ground skills at all?

Bojangles 09-28-2008 09:05 PM

Yes, they get tested.

He's fighting Ken Shamrock. He's more of a striker than a wrestler. He's gonna get STOMPED by Kimbo. Shamrock lost 8 of his 10 last fights..

Very aware of his fighting style or recently loosing style :winkwink:

Not exactly a fight that seems to interesting but could be. To bad Ken seems to have been beaten a little retarded over the years.

It looks like there some women on Saturday's card. The chick fights can be pretty entertaining.

Never heard of Spirit! And I even watch some of the obscure ones like Cage Rage from England...

SPIRIT is out of Korea.

Turboface 09-28-2008 09:27 PM

Have you guys been hearing about Donald Trump and Mark Burnett are going to be getting involved with EliteXC? With The Donald's loot and Mark Burnett's reality show golden touch, I'm sure they will come up with a cool reality based show, much like the UFC's 'Ultimate Fighter'. There's even talk about Tito Ortiz going with EliteXC lately. Should be interesting to see what happens with all that is going down..

Doctor Dre 09-28-2008 11:40 PM

In Japan they are blood tested, in the US they are brain scanned, blood tested, steroid tested etc... The athletic commisions oversea everything.

Dream is a new org.

Pride was the main org in japan. For years, it has been the #1 org in the world... until there were some scandals over there (links to mafia), and they lost their TV deal.

Pride fighters were regarded as the best fighters in the world. When the UFC bought them, it proven that they were very good, gaining 3 world titles in about a year, but not nearly as better as people thought. Superstars like Shogun and Crocop went to loose quickily.

The UFC sent some guys over there (Their poster boy Chuck Lidell lost to Rampage in the GP), pride was supposed to send some back in the UFC but never did.

Nowdays, most pride stars (outside of the heavyweight div) are fighting in the UFC.

2 ufc champs are ex-pride fighterS :
Noguerra (HW)
Anderson Silva (MW)

Other notables :
Rampage
Wanderlei Silva
Shogun Rua
Sokoudjou
Dan Henderson

Outside the UFC :
Fedor (fighting currently for affliction)
Ricardo Arona (not fighting atm)
Mark Hunt (k1 champ, too big to fight in the US)
Alistair Overeem
etc
