I discovered a missile silo in my backyard - seriously.

This morning I was reading the news about that hijacked ship which lead me to Wikipedia looking up Russian warships, then US warships, then missile silos in Arizona, which lead me to missile silos in California. Imagine my surprise when I saw my home town of Lincoln, California, on that list.

Beale AFB is not too far from here, and in the 1960s they had three Titan missile launch sites. Some quick research showed me that the launch site in my hometown was within walking distance of my house.

According to Google maps, this is what it looks like from the air....

So, I went!

Not much to see really.....

Now... If I can just figure a way in!

hypedough 09-28-2008 04:20 PM

That's some cool shit. Get a way in ASAP, you never know...

After Shock Media 09-28-2008 04:20 PM

Having grown up in Clyde, Ca which is between Concord, Ca and Pittsburg, Ca. In essence a small town surrounded on all sides by the Concord Naval Weapons Station. Those silo's are a very common site. Though when I was growing up there "was no missles there" even though we would see them being transported on the trains as well as having tons of those silo's everywhere in the hills.

Rochard 09-28-2008 04:22 PM

Here's the site under construction in late 1950s / early 1960s.

http://www.rochardsbunnyranch.com/rock/silo7.jpg

Compare it to the google mape above and tell me where the entrance is....

Young 09-28-2008 04:32 PM

pretty fucking cool. bring a camera and some lights in there once you find an entrance.

Tanker 09-28-2008 04:39 PM

Eriic 09-28-2008 04:44 PM

I discovered a missile silo in my pants

quantum-x 09-28-2008 04:46 PM

You can easily slip into these places - and you wouldn't be the first to - but pay attention for the following gotchyas

1 - Some of the silos have buried motion detectors, feds will show.
2 - Most are semi / somewhat flooded
3 - Most are rusted / somewhat rusted
4 - Combinations of the above can lead to acute rusty pipe through leg syndrome :D

That aside, go nuts, take photos :D

Bill8 09-28-2008 04:48 PM

pretty fuckin cool.

They sell those things once in a while.

And I've heard most of the abandoned ones are filled with water now. If you look around you can find pics of water filled silos.

quantum-x 09-28-2008 04:55 PM

BTW, for an idea of the scale of the missle projects, check out

I discovered number 1 more than once as a kid. Parents got very sick of having to pick us (friends and I) up at the MP's office at the naval station.

There in a bunker/silo combination in the Hollywood Hills just South of Mullholand Drive that was bought many years ago by some guy who converted it into a house.

Last I heard, Julian Lennon (John's son) owned it.

Spunky 09-28-2008 05:25 PM

I didn't realize you lived in Lincoln, Rochard. I thought you lived in AZ somewhere.

My brother owns a home there off Ferrari Ranch.

Here is what I did with photoshop.

I want to go there, and DIG!

Using the ratio of angles, here is what I think the 3 silos map to:
http://i33.tinypic.com/vnnmte.jpg

Using perspective to match them up, I think this is about the angle that the original photo was taken:

ImageShack.us sucks donkey balls.

In other words, you found a silo in your pants to INSERT A MISSILE INTO?

Ghey...

Was it abandoned? Do kids play and explore it? Do you have pictures of it on GFY.com?

Hard to tell from that picture, could be an active infrared beam. Assuming it is, the two distinct rectangles kinda make me think it is post with an IR transceiver on it... you know, the little bing-bongs some shops have across their doorway.

If there's a reflector somewhere parallel to the visible face of that post, you'd best not walk between.

dozey 09-29-2008 05:44 AM

Incidentally, if you have a nightvision scope or low quality digital video camera, there's a chance it'll pick up the emitter wavelength allowing visual determination. You won't see the beam, however one of the rectangles will probably be glowing.

HomerSimpson 09-29-2008 06:54 AM

cool now take pictures and send those to Russians :)

gornyhuy 09-29-2008 06:58 AM

That is soooo cool! Seriously.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I came out up with..... The problem is there is a building (house?) in that area which is why I stayed away from it. The land seems to be owned by a federal fire fighting agency and they have a few buildings there.

I'll have to do a night recon - which sounds like fun really.

The Duck 09-29-2008 08:59 AM

Want to enter one of those.

NetwErk GUrl 09-29-2008 09:03 AM

Be careful... the carefree days of kid-style shenanigans are pretty much gone. You can't say you were just curious and expect to get out of trouble anymore. So don't get caught.

Slack bastard :D

pornguy 09-29-2008 09:29 AM

Put a fish tank near there, and see if they grow extra legs and shit.
