In a Thursday interview with Katie Couric, Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin cited "trade missions" with Russia as her one tangible piece of foreign policy experience.

What trade missions?

Research doesn't show a single Alaska-Russia trade mission since former Democratic governor Tony Knowles visited Siberia in 1997, when Palin was running Wasilla, according to Salon.com.

When the reporter asked gubernatorial spokeswoman Kate Morgan about this issue, she refused to answer. Morgan claimed she couldn't legally discuss the matter because she is a state employee and the reporter had learned about the trade missions through the Couric interview, which stems from her bid for the Oval Office.

Spokespeople for the McCain/Palin campaign did not respond to requests for comment.

Palin has never visited Russia and had never traveled outside of North America until last year, the Associated Press reported. The vice presidential candidate had never met a foreign leader until a trip to New York this week.

Yeah, nobody needs to read that article to figure that out.

The point is that the vice presidential debate is THIS THURDAY. This should be some amazing entertainment. The world is waiting for her to fuck it all up for McCain. Actually itll be funny if Joe Biden brings up the "trade missions" ....

That's why I said "may be". Actually I saw her 80's video in another thread, and now I can admit it for sure: she was, she is and she will stay a fucking ugly person for the rest of her life.

She goes in with the advantage that expectations are low for her. People expect a trainwreck so if she just gets through the debate without any disasters, it will be spun as a victory.

The race is close, which means that nearly half of voters right now are ok with the idea of her being President should something happen to McCain. Voters are extremely polarized by party. If one is comfortable with Palin after seeing her interviews, what would convince them to change? A hiccup during the debate? The nominees seem to be battling for the few independents and undecideds to win.

I doubt americans are that stupid.... there are varying degrees of stupidness but I doubt that she just needs to get through it because this is just too serious.

Joe biden is going to rip her to shreds but he's going to have to play his cards carefully. If he makes her look stupid, its great but if he outright attacks her things might go the other way.

Have her interviews made her look like a genius? Even mildly intelligent? It seems of little consequence. If I'm not mistaken I heard on the news that there have only been about 2 or 3 landslide Presidential victories in American history. There are arguments for why this should be one, but there are also arguments as to why it won't. I may be wrong, but it seems people are hardliners in one camp or the other (with the exception of handfuls of independents and undecideds), and fundamentally resistant to vote the other direction.

Have you paid attention the last 8 years? The person with lower expectations(Bush) just needs to survive to "win".

Never underestimate the supidity of the general public. If Americans were not that stupid then it wouldn't be a close race at the moment. That said it's very far from being just Americans on the whole who are that dumb. As I say....never underestimate the stupidity of the genral public - in any country.

No they havent but they also havent received much air time, especially in light of the financial crisis so im not entirely sure that she has been rubbished enough in the media. However, the debate WILL receive a huge amount of exposure so if she looks completely useless when tested on some very serious issues, it could help ruin McCain.....

No but in my view that was a different situation because of his background. Bush was part of the bush dynasty and had all the history of his father to support him and she was a virtual unknown. So I dont think it will have the same effect.

Perhaps, but I've had conversations with people who believe Palin did an excellent job in her interviews. Whether they really believe that or not, I don't know. But it suggests that short of a mental breakdown during the debate, things probably won't change much.

Major discord seems to come down to one topic - economic policy. Taxes. Who is taxed, how that tax money will be spent (wasted), and the effect of those taxes on the overall economy. There is a fundamental difference in approach by both candidates. Some make the case that Obama is another Carter - tax and spend. Others make the case that McCain is another Bush - don't tax but spend. The result is arguably the same, debt and economic ruin but one policy might get us there sooner than the other. Anyway, there doesn't seem to be much wiggle room with people's perspectives on this so they stick with their party's nominees.

Then there is the 3rd party approach - don't tax AND don't spend.
