What's the best one out there?

If you have a mac, Handbrake.

I could try that, but I was looking at

You could just give me the $30 and install Handbrake. It's been there since the iPod was capable of playing videos. It looks like this piece of shovelware with poor english is just another frontend to ffmpeg, anyhow.

Get AVS Video Tools. I've been using it for a couple years, and its great. very easy to use.

VideoCharge is great for any type of video conversions

Am using Handbrake... seems very slow .. Like over an hour to do 1 dvd

What's the best FREE software for Windows if you just want to back up DVD's to your hard drive for media center use?

I used to use dvdshrink back in the day, but looks like that is outdated now.
