My mom just pissed me off!

My mom is: 63 years old, a retired pediatrician, and fascinated at how easily people can make money online nowadays.

A few months ago I offered to help her "test the waters" to see if she could monetize her knowledge online, to see how much money she could make with google adsense. I offered to create her a little blog in blogger, so she can have her own writing place and give advice to moms about kids' health.

Since her laptop broke a couple of months ago, I bought her a brand new computer last week for her birthday, mostly so she could get started with her blog.

Well, the first day she was very excited about it. The second day, she said she wasn't sure there was any money in that. The third day she promised she would write but didn't. And finally, today she asked me to write something for her in the style I think sells the most, so she can use it as a guide for her writing.

It's obvious that she's not interested, and I'm soooo pissed now! I spent $1K on a computer for her to dab at writing blog articles, and now she asks me to do it for her!

Am I being too harsh?

I bet you can't WAIT to move out!

Pleasurepays 09-24-2008 01:26 PM

sounds like most likely you were more interested in the idea than she was ;)

You fucked up hard.

Don't buy computers for old people, they don't give a shit about it.

She probably is not using the Guitar Hero you bought either.

lazycash 09-24-2008 01:39 PM

Sounds like you might have given her a false representation of how easy and how much she could earn online with a blog.

Eriic 09-24-2008 01:42 PM

She was just humoring you cause she is trying to be nice since you refuse to go out and get a job....................

DARKHORSERIDER 09-24-2008 01:42 PM

Dont force people to do things they dont wanna do, especially the oldies dont like pc's, well most, unless they can write a gardening or knitting blog lol
P.S. Send me your patterns hahaha

Manowar 09-24-2008 01:48 PM

they like the concept, but no one likes the hard work

BlackCrayon 09-24-2008 01:50 PM

people have a tendency to give up if they don't start making money instantly for some reason.

Bro Media - BANNED FOR LIFE 09-24-2008 01:52 PM

You should scream in her face about how she never cared about you, and how stupid she is, and how much you hate her, then stomp your feet as you run off to your room and slam the door to listen to some emo music and cut yourself.

That only works if you tell your mother that you want to have sex with her cause you are a 35 year old virgin and no women is willing to fuck you.:disgust

exactly, I had pretty much the same problem, all was great when we were discussing the concept, what needs to be done, etc... but then fell apart quite quickly when we got to the "lets do the work" part... :thumbsup

it is very easy to get excited about the idea of making money online but a completely different thing is working hard and making things happen ....... writing can be a hard job and not everyone is cut for it .......

sorry to hear about this chick's 1K thrown down the drain ... It might be true that she might have been more excited about thinking that her mother could make money online than her own mother was..

czarina 09-24-2008 02:31 PM

I guess you guys are right... I was more excited about it than she was. What bothers me the most is that all in all, I bought her the computer and all she will do with it, is write a couple of emails a week. What a waste! But, lesson learned! And in any case, I can give it to my son, who's 3 years old and loves playing with Thomas The Train online :)

Sansa 09-24-2008 02:36 PM

I've had this scenario play out a couple of times. Just like people above said, you were more interested in the idea than your mom.

The best thing I did was send my mom back to college. It was pretty weird for her at first, being an M.D., but now she's eating it up. She's kicking ass too, top of her class.

perhaps the financial gain approach isn't what inspires your mom to get down to it.. sounds like she's into doing it but now she wants to make sure she 'does it right' and that's why she wanted an example from you.. getting lost in the finer details kinda thing

if I were you I'd suggest to her that she just write stuff out, don't include blog, don't include money making, don't include keywords etc.. just like... hey mom, this is your 'column'.. write whatever the hell you want in whatever style you want.

She KNOWS her shit from what you say, so she has advice/info to share.. and maybe if she's excited about sharing THAT (or 'being published') then she'll stick with it

you can always do the whole seo thing for her after the fact.. 'money excitement' often fades fast without results.. but 'interest excitement' can last way longer cos you're being rewarded in other ways

I dunno, just a thought.. yknow 'old dogs' can still learn new tricks. they just need to be taught right :winkwink: :2 cents:

Same thing almost happened with me and my Dad... They think it's so easy. :1orglaugh

Enemator 09-24-2008 04:25 PM

Crying about your mother on a porn board...now THAT's a big fucking FAIL.

Imortyl Pussycat 09-24-2008 04:27 PM

put some games like solitaire in there or show her where to play pinochle, hearts or spades against other, real people and you won't get her away from that pc.

kahell 09-24-2008 04:58 PM

Perceive the 1k computer as a future investment not as a waste

ExLust 09-24-2008 05:46 PM

Better way is to ask her next time what she wants.

Women don't know what they want.

CamDoughCommando 09-24-2008 06:10 PM

How much did she spend on you while you grew up (assumingly) with her? As a pediatrician, I'm sure it was a tad more than 1k.
