Comcast has become the latest ISP to shut down access to Usenet newsgroups as part of a voluntary agreement to try and fight child porn online.

In fact, Comcast's Help & Support section makes it clear that its move to block newsgroups is more about offloading responsibility than actually trying to fight child porn. In response to a question over whether Comcast offers newsgroups service, the company advises interested subscribers to choose from one of several third-party newsgroup providers.
Has been going on for quite a while in the US and Canada ( maybe elsewhere as well ).

I have giganews ... better retention and complete posts.

Pedobear inconsolable.

I remember when USENET was useful.

Well, no.. but I remember when USENET was amusing.

Manowar 09-23-2008 03:20 PM

wow, i wonder how many will follow

The Duck 09-23-2008 03:21 PM

Usenet is dying, much better some years ago.

quantum-x 09-23-2008 04:03 PM

Usenet isn't dying in the slightest.
Noone cares if shitty ISPs drop access. They had crap retention and limited groups.

Anyone who uses Usenet goes through a provider.

Usenet is dying?
- Giganews just upped to 240 days binary retention, and traffic has been steadily increasing [ www.top1000.org ]
- Virgin in the UK just opened up a full access Usenet service for its clients, after having pressure put on them to terminate file sharers. [ Source: http://torrentfreak.com/isp-to-volun...ternet-080331/ ]

....

Seriously dude you should read dslreports.com more often. This news is old news and Comcast is hardly the first to have done this.

Personally I don't get all the hub bub over this. I've been on the net for 9 years and I have never been to or used a newsgroup. I'm not sure I wold know what one was if it sat on my face and farted. I'm not sure what the purpose of one would be in this day and age.

I collect old music from the 30's, 40's and from as much the USA as France or Italy. There are many newsgroups devoted to this public domain music. Bandwith of dl is assumed by the ISP ....

I also collect Wurlitzer juke boxes ( pre-war till 1965 ) . A lot of info, help, discussion exist there.

Now, with the arrival of instant forums ( such as this one we are on now ) it can seem less relevant.

:2 cents:

I used to spend so much time on usenet in about 1993-1994 and I am constantly surprised it is even still out there. At one stage you couldn't even log into any group at all without getting spammed by child porn.
