What are the best UK tv shows?

So I downloaded all seasons of Peep Show and loved it. Really refreshing to see something not made in the US.

Was wondering if there were any more gems like Peep Show is all, Mitchell and Webb apparently run shit over there ;)

I should say i'm already addicted to Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmare (uk version only us version is awful with the voice over shit).

Much obliged.

tinman2207 09-23-2008 07:58 PM

Try Gavin and Stacey.

Its brilliant.

DDUK 09-23-2008 08:25 PM

only fools and horses

PiffStenis 09-23-2008 11:12 PM

Neighbours :thumbsup

Zebra 09-23-2008 11:32 PM

Life on Mars
Spooks
If you can find the mini-series State of Play you should watch it.

heymatty 09-23-2008 11:35 PM

If you like UK version of Kitchen Nightmares, you should really like the UK Apprentice.

Also try the Restaurant with Raymond Blanc.

If you like cooking shows more than business go for Masterchef. Masterchef: the professionals just finished and was a great season imo.

heymatty 09-23-2008 11:37 PM

PS if you want an invite to a UK only tv torrent site just lemme know. I live in the US but I am from the UK its great.

Stephen McTowelie 09-24-2008 03:35 AM

Have you not watched THE MIGHTY BOOSH yet ???
And if not why not ?
http://api.ning.com/files/48cexbRAlB...ghtyBoosh2.jpg

Also other stuff to watch would be Red Dwarf if you've not seen it before classic british comedy.
In the same random and side splitting funnyness that boosh has is the IT Crowd that is great too.

Ross 09-24-2008 03:39 AM

Spooks is great. I don't really like very many UK tv shows. If you're looking for a good thriller type series try buying Wire In The Blood on play.com

Another Restaurant fan...last season was pretty good. I haven't made my mind up on this one yet. I was hoping that the Brown and Green girls would do something more than they have afterwards. They were on a couple cooking shows right after the show and always made the kind of healthy stuff I could make at home.

Masterchef Professional was much better than I thought it would be. I feared it would be more like those ones they have the former royal correspondent doing that are a bit too snobby for me.

Spudman 09-24-2008 04:41 AM

mighty boosh is awesome and if you like that take a look at "flight of the concords" its awesome too!

I knew somebody would say Boosh...are they due a new series? Their previous series is being rerun and that usually means something new is coming.

Red Dwarf is my fave comedy of all time. We also really enjoy IT Crowd too but you have to get into it for a bit. Last season it was showing its Father Ted roots a bit more which I enjoyed but my husband thought it has lost a bit of the geekeness. Of course, Noel from Boosh is in IT Crowd too.

Manowar 09-24-2008 04:45 AM

I've seen Black Books

pretty good

messiah1 09-24-2008 05:06 AM

Coupling - it's like Friends and Seinfeld but it has a lot more sexual conversation.

We are watching Black Books on dvd at the moment but it isn't grabbing me. Bailey is funny but the other guy just yells his lines far too much for me.

ukxtra 09-24-2008 05:41 AM

Life On Mars
Mock The Week
and definately The Wrong Door

Sarah_Jayne 09-24-2008 05:57 AM

Mock The Week is fun but probably won't make much sense if you aren't a bit into UK current events. Much like Have I Got News For You.

Godsmack 09-24-2008 06:06 AM

IT CROWD... hilarious :thumbsup

Dylan Moran is a fucking god amongst men, don't you dare even think about not worshipping him.. Bailey is a tool.

Life on Mars, Spooks, Mighty Boosh are all awesome.. I'd actually say Life on Mars is probably in my top 3 favourite shows of the last couple of years. Black Books is fairly old now but worth checking out, It Crowd is good. If you want to go back a fair way, check out Chris Morris's "Jam" (also as mentioned Red Dwarf). Brilliant.

Ps. Neighbours is Australian, Flight of the Conchords (although fucking awesome) is from New Zealand.

sperbonzo 09-24-2008 06:45 AM

TOP GEAR

Hilarious, fun, informative, and the enthusiasm of the hosts is very infectious

:2 cents:

johnuk 09-24-2008 07:04 AM

Peep Show is such a good show but yeah I agree their sketch show they did just didn't grab me like Peep Show did.

The original Ricky Gervais Office is brilliant (although I really love the US version as well).

Alan Partridge is one of the best characters in sitcom history. The 1st series is a spoof chat show, in the 2nd series his chat show has been cancelled, he lives in a travel tavern (motel) trying to get his career back on track. Smells my cheese you mother! Brilliant!

No one else seems to like it but me but 15 Storeys High is a very quiet, subtle, dark sitcom. It's a slow burner, I loved it but many won't.

james_clickmemedia 09-24-2008 08:20 AM

I like the following UK shows

Top Gear
Fith Gear
The Dragons Den
Skins

Oh I feel like such a fool for forgetting Alan Partridge !
The office is a classic first series of extras is very good too.
As for 15 stories high I fucking loved it Sean Lock is great in it and with one of the episodes featuring a dead swan and sean in the stocks it dont get much better.

Another not very well known comedy is Garth Merenghis dark place which is very funny just a bit weird.

Oh and Sarah Black Books is fucking hilarious you just need to get into it also dont think anyone has mentioned Spaced yet which is Simon Peggs greatest work better than his films.

Finally Mighty Boosh is touring at the moment so I think thats the reason for the replay of the last series that and its fucking funny. :thumbsup :2 cents:

Top Gear !!

Not much else to be honest...

AdultTrafficMedia 09-24-2008 08:45 AM

Dragons` Den
The Apprentice
Match of the Day
Sky Sports News

rigrunner 09-24-2008 10:25 AM

Derren Brown - many different series all about mind magic fascinating to watch
Here's a little clip of him in action
http://www.metacafe.com/fplayer/5757...gypsy_scam.swf

I loved Green Wing, Ideal and Little Britain when they were on TV, all of those are comedy series, Little Britain is more of a sketch show.

Can't say I watch much TV these days...if I do it tends to be Most Haunted cause that series is pure laughs - though I'm not sure it's supposed to be! It's a 'hunt the ghosts' kind of show, I think the team behind that have gone out to the USA now for series' over there I'm look forward to it.

gideongallery 09-24-2008 10:36 AM

if you like sci-fi merlin/dr who/torchwood are pretty good
robin hood is a good fantasy period piece
spooks and spooks :code nine are good if you like 24 style shows.
dragon's den is great
blake 7 is comming back
secret diary of a call girl although it is not as interesting as the first season

come on!! Gardener's World, but since Monty left, it won't be as good.
But you've got to put Eastender's up there.... #1 for me - the only reason I bothered to get a sat dish put up in france. Then I went downhill and got Sky :disgust

borked 09-24-2008 10:46 AM

oh and reruns of Michael Palin's trip around the world - frikken fantastic.

borked 09-24-2008 10:49 AM

Planet Earth too - frikken excellent on BBC HD.

OK, that's enough - anything on ITV is shite. Never really seen anything on C4 for over 9 years

Sarah_Jayne 09-24-2008 10:51 AM

I can't stand Most Haunted of any of those kind of shows. For a channel called Living TV there is an awful lot about dead people on it.

Dood 09-24-2008 12:05 PM

No one has mentioned Shameless yet. It comes on IFC here in the US and is only up to season 3. I've got all 3 seasons tivo'd so I can watch it over and over again.

Stellar 09-24-2008 12:41 PM

Thanks for the replies folks.. Here is what we get in the US on BBC.

1. Top Gear
2. Shameless
3. Mitchell & Web Look
4. Gavin & Stacey
5. Most Haunted

I had to download Peep Show (so fucking worth it) which smashed that Mitchell and Webb Look.. (I knew their good humor from the movie Magicians).

Peep Show instantly went to my top 5 tv series ever US or UK, so if I struck gold on that.. was wondering if their was anything similar (well shot, dark humor, mammoth brains).

and Yes, Flight of the Conchords is in my top 5 as well.

Just looking for something I can bank on being good.. Maybe we should do a consensus.

Thx.

Sarah_Jayne 09-24-2008 01:03 PM

If you liked Peep Show then do try The Mighty Boosh.

Sarah_Jayne 09-24-2008 01:04 PM

Oh and an oldie but I liked Spaced. If you liked Shaun Of The Dead then give it a shot because it is nearly all the same people and was the series they did prior to the film.

Stellar 09-24-2008 02:36 PM

Thanks Sarah :)

Downloading The Mighty Boosh seasons now :)

Rated a 9.1 on IMDB, looks dark.. I will let ya know :winkwink:

Sarah_Jayne 09-24-2008 02:40 PM

Give it a bit so you can get into the weirdness of it. They don't stay in the zoo for all the seasons. That will make more sense later..lol

halfpint 09-24-2008 02:48 PM

Wow nobody even mentioned Coronation Street or Eastbenders.. The core of British soaps my misses watches Eastenders without fail even If I am trying to watch something I hate both of them

I do like the Dragons Den and My Family

johnuk 09-24-2008 06:01 PM

I forgot QI. It's a quiz show but sooo worth the watch, absolutely hilarious! I learnt more from QI than I ever did at university. Anything that's got Stephen Fry involved I would pay to watch

I forgot "Absolute Power".. very good.
Also speaking of Nick Frost, Hyperdrive isn't too bad from the one episode i've seen. Had one guy talking about how his dad was dying so he wrote a program of himself to bring him up after he was gone.. was awesome, there's a snippet on youtube but it doesn't have the funny bits in it so no point embedding.

donkevlar 09-24-2008 07:36 PM

Uk Office, obviously.
Spaced.
The Mighty Boosh.
Garth Merenghis Dark Place.
Brass Eye.
Alan Partridge (especially the later seasons)
Saxondale.
Swinging.
The League Of Gentlemen.
Ali G
Fonejacker.
Extras.

I'll post more when I can think of them

donkevlar 09-25-2008 06:46 PM

This information is gold, people ^^^^

Stellar 09-26-2008 02:52 PM

Yes it is.. but some of those shows we can watch on BBC America.

Regardless I have downloaded The Mighty Boosh, only got to watch the beginning of an episode.. some funny parts.. some silly.

I will give it an honest shot though, I still don't think anything will beat the dynamic of Peep Show.

Yeah, very good post people.

buyandsell 09-26-2008 03:34 PM

Shameless

buzzy 09-26-2008 03:37 PM
