How many designers actually make a living...

Im a total graphic design nerd and there seems to be a ton of people who whore out their services when required

So how many of you actually make the majority of your money by designing sites and things for others?

It seems everybody calls themselves designer lately.. I think it are only the top ones who make the big bucks and the rest can't live from it. I think there's no middle class.

when i went to art school
a million years ago
they used to tell us 1 in 1000 will make a passable living someway associated to art
the others will wait tables or do something entirely different
it wasnt far from the truth

Is it a good income? Better than say, working in an office?

MetaMan 09-22-2008 07:06 AM

i am all my income from designing but i have ran and worked with large sites for years. now i moved into more of consulting role.

there is lots of money to be made, almost limitless depending on the amount of time you put in.

but this is if you have the skills or not, very few do.

you can make $100k+ pretty easy if you do.

our company has designers we keep on salary and then personally i have a designer that i give about 1k a month to in biz plus she does a ton of other stuff

freelance is easy for designers and programmers in this day and age if you are good and know how to work all the social network outlets and the freelancer sites =)

No, I just did the CMS for it. The site was designed by guy who runs the site, and last I asked he's unfortunately not interested in doing design work for other people

I had a remote gig for a major program the last 18 months that paid quite fair for working remotely...and paid quite a bit better than "working in an office." I have recently gone in-house with a different program and have doubled what the previous company was paying me.

It's a very decent living when you have the skills and are not willing to settle for beer money.
