Resizing browser windows

Webpages are generally optimized for a maximized browser screen, right? But some people don't browse with a maximized browser...
Would using a javascript to maximize their browser be good, bad, or so-so?
Keep in mind we ain't talking full screen here, just maximized

quiet 10-30-2002 11:32 PM

i fucking hate that shit. just my opinion :glugglug

Amputate Your Head 10-30-2002 11:33 PM

long as it's not that full screen bullshit that has no menu, address, or control bar.... but if it's just a regular maximized screen..... sure. Why not.

You do know that your next browser window will open at the same size as the last one you closed..... right?

PersianKitty 10-30-2002 11:37 PM

I hate it too.. don't mess with my browser. I won't list sites that do it.

lol.... browsers are 'messed with' all the time....
perfectly sized and timed popups, all without controls or address bars... login screens, scrollbar and text styling, status bar tricks, etc....

maximizing a browser is so bad?

i personally can't stand it. i don't do it on any of my free stuff or paysite stuff.

it definitely bothers the surfer, makes them think popup :2 cents:

hate that stuff especially when i got windows sized to the way i like it.... can imagine it would piss surfers off and would probably trigger a reflex to close the window in fear that a series pop-ups were just around the corner

i know that... i'm talking about maximizing my surfer's browser so that my site displays properly... this is not just in the context of adult sites either.

i admit that i'd be annoyed by a site maximizing my screen, but i was wondering if most surfers would feel the same way.
like does the casual surfer feel the same way as the professional surfer?

the stuff that I can't stand is the fucking spawn windows that get minimized and are uncloseable by any method short of the taskman or a reboot, the crap that takes over your screen at max size with not so much as a border to grab, the endless popup chaining, the fuckin' bookmark pop screen, and crappy fucking Frontpage fade effects on page transitions.

Aside from that, almost anything that better enhances the experience for the surfer is okay by me. If someone maximizes my window for me, great... I was going to do it anyway. But leave the controls there. I think a far more irritating practice would be to pop windows trying to sell me on some crap I don't want if I don't join the site. If I don't join and close the window, there's no reason to jam 9 more pop windows trying to sell me on fat bitches or trannys or some fag site.... I closed the window.... I don't want any. Go away. This is the message the surfer would like to express. But harmless stuff like maximizing a window shouldn't even be a concern. It's harmless. The only reason it IS a concern (like you said, it gives the impression of a popup) is because dipshits have abused the popup idea to fuckin' death. And now everyone is scared shitless of them. I don't click 90% of the links posted here because I KNOW there's gonna be a freakin' ass-train of crap following it.

I actually have Ctrl-W mapped to my scroll wheel.... I'm a popup killin' mutha fucka! :glugglug

exactly - for me it's always a question of pragmatics. certainly nothing wrong with resizing per se, but the reality is that it scares surfers (due to all of the bs you just mentioned) right at the point where you are trying to sell them.

psyko514 10-31-2002 12:19 AM

thanks for the input guys...
i didn't make a link between pop-ups and resizing, but it makes sense.
personally, i don't like having my computer settings fucked with in any way. if my window isn't maximized, i don't want it maximized. if i think it needs to be maximized, i'll maximize it. but i'm that way because i spent 27 hrs a day on a computer. many people don't, and just surf in a half-assed fashion, not realizing that a webpage would look better if it were maximized (or at a better resolution, diff. browser, etc)

you guys are bitching about pop-ups, do any of you have pop-up killers? they do work you know (at least to some extent)

popup killers suck. You're throwing out the baby with the bath water. There are plenty of legit sites that use popup code for OTHER things, but the popup killers also kill them, rendering much of those types of sites, essentially useless.

andi_germany 10-31-2002 01:47 AM

I would say to leave it alone. First of all its very hard to calculate what will happen with different browsers. A lot of webmasters just create a site on their machine and forget that there are Macs and other machines to surf. This is a very common mistake by webmasters even the ones that think they know how to make a site. Most porn surfers have java script of anyhow and if I have a window resized for surfing I have my reasons and if you maximize it I would be very pissed.

lol.... you guys got issues.... :1orglaugh

there's so much shit that can be done to you and your browser, you don't even know.... and you guys get all bent outta shape over maximizing a window.... heh..

time might be better invested worrying about certain cookies and active X and shit goin' on that you CAN'T see..... :glugglug
