Joe Dirt

I rented this movie on video the other night and I am posting to warn people to avoid this abysmal movie at all costs.

It is, without a doubt, the most retarded film I have EVER had the misfortune of watching. It is an absolute abortion of a movie and demonstrates that movie studios are indeed pitching their product at the lowest common denominator - the all-American retard.

Please Osama, when you get a chance, destroy Hollywood and the evil movie studios that dwell within. You would be doing both the world and the art of cinema a great service.

I like Michael Moore. Will definitely catch up with this one when it arrives Down Under.

Jamdin 10-30-2002 10:48 PM

Dude, it's been running on most movie channels for the past few months so why bother renting it. The movie has its few moments...

Lev 10-30-2002 10:49 PM

I don't know whats up with Hollywood these days, I don't see any movie worth seeing. What happen to all the gangster movies, like Godfather, Goodfellas, Casino, how come they don't make movies like that anymore :(

I will never, never, NEVER, N... E... V... E... R... pay for cable television. Ever.

Jamdin 10-30-2002 11:04 PM

It beats renting movies that you don't like...you can watch a few minutes & then flip the channel. Cheaper in the long run...

I don't watch that much TV because 99% of it is shit. I have better things to spend my money on. I just have to remember to read reviews of movies at "Film Threat" before renting them out.

This review could have saved me a few bucks

bawdy 10-30-2002 11:09 PM

The only thing i found funny in Joe Dirt was when the dog got its nuts stuck to floor.... i pissed myself laughing at that.... the rest of the film was complete shite

kuwawawah 10-30-2002 11:10 PM

BrettJ 10-30-2002 11:39 PM

Sorry, but I think your crass junk food culture is REALLY nasty.

There's no hate involved. It's just a shame that Hollwood makes such shitty movies.

There seems to be no concept of "art" in your country. Not in the mainstream anyway.

My country... Norway, Sweden, Spain, but certainly not the US :)

I agree on the shitty movies produced in the US though, for the most part.
Worst piece of junk EVER created has to be that goddamn "Armageddon" movie. I almost puked all over myself when that one came.
Bruce Willis is the worst piece of shit actor to hit the screen in the last 20 years.

And yeah, junk food culture is nasty, someone should fucking sue McDonalds for making chicks around the world so fat.

Firehorse 10-31-2002 01:35 AM

We don't watch Tv very much.

We have satellite so we can have more choice when we do, especially documentaries and the UFC!:thumbsup

i think they should have shortened that movie down to the 30 seconds steve buscemi was riding the nuke on the moon.. hehe that bit was ace. jeez i dig buscemi. I really dig david spade.. he's a funny fucker.. but yeah the movie kinda sucked. and hey - lay off pay tv :) music, movie and comedy channels.. actually makes tv worth watching.

bhutocracy 10-31-2002 01:42 AM

forgot to mention the docos too.. although the abc and sbs do kick it in that department.. noting like a good SBS doco.

pornJester 10-31-2002 01:43 AM

Ok haters, Joe Dirt happens to be an AWESOME MOVIE! I've seen it at least a dozen times, most likely more. Lots of great actors and hella funny moments. SO STEP OFF! :BangBang:

no no no, you don't get it...we need the junkfood to keep the locals appeased...and "art" is NEVER mainstream....art thrives on the edges, as it should....
there are a ton of good movies out there, but you can't rely on your Roger Eberts and your Rex Reeds (god I hate that fucker)...they know dick about underground and independent movies...

good call on FilmThreat, but also check out the message board at www.joblo.com and the stuff reviewed over at www.b-independent.com seek out the dusty section of the video store...

remember, if Blockbuster Video has more than 1 copy of any movie, wait to check it out...I thrive on the treasure hunt that is going to a mainstream video store and finding movies that they only have one copy of...I would have avoided movies like "The Cube", "Gummo" and "Welcome To The Dollhouse" if they would have had more than a single copy and I probably would have missed out on these great flicks....thank goodness for the Blockbuster way of carrying 100 copies of "Pearl Harbor" and only one copy of "Killer Klowns From Outer Space".......

fuck it, when I retire from porn, I want to open an underground video store...stock the Guinnea Pig films, the dogma films, everything even remotely touched by Sam Raimi (except that fucking stupid baseball movie with Kevin Costner)...Italian Horror with have it's own section...and goddamnit, I will have TWO FUCKING COPIES OF "Ice From The Sun"...

rant over :)

What about all the movies that Blockbuster won't stock because they aren't family friendly? Fuck Blockbuster.

You seem to have a good knowledge of independent and foreign cinema. Your underground video store had better have Hong Kong action classics (Woo's earlier films etc etc), Troma films and early Peter Jackson (Bad Taste, Brain Dead).

BTW, I love art. I go to Europe every year and wander around art galleries stoned. Art is one of the few things that separates human beings from other animals. I can't get enough of it... fine art, sculpture, architecture, photography, whatever...

Well, if you don't know who David Spade & Dennis Miller are then I can't help you. It's a comedy, and it was funny. It wasn't Braveheart or the Shawshank Redemption, but it served it's purpose of entertaining. Smoke a blunt and watch it again :thumbsup

Yup, the movies Blockbuster won't touch are even harder to find, but the hunt is half the fun...

You know it... did a huge article on Hong Kong cinema for SetGo :) and I own Bad Taste on both video and dvd....and looking for the stronger cut of Brain Dead before I plunk down any money for the DVD...the first time I rented the movie, I made the biggest fuckup of all time, rented the r-rated version by mistake...I'm actively seeking "Forgotten Silver" a small film Peter Jackson did in his early years but it's very hard to find (almost as hard to find (in the US anyways) as "Meet The Feebles"....

Troma films? now, you've really found my softspot...while I can sit through artsy fartsy and acting clinic type films, I'm most at home with cheesy b movies, horror flicks and just plain fucked up movies..."Tromeo and Juliet" is my favorite of the Troma films (any films featuring incest, body piercing, lesbianism, mutations, the writings of William Shakespear and narration by Lemmy from Motorhead can't miss), but damn, lately they've been putting their name on everything and have been tarnished a bit, but I did notice they picked up the rights to "Combat Shock" one of the most fucked up "vietnam vet hallucinating and fucking people up" movies I've ever seen (and of course shot for only about $40K) Hmm, maybe I should do a write-up on that flick...

No kidding...why can't people just watch a flick every now and then without having to find the meaning to life in it.

I've seen gummo...I"ve seen happiness...I've seen independent flicks that will never make it to Syk's underground video store.

But I've also laughed my ass off at anything and everything the Farrely bros touch...or Adam Sandler flicks...and I even laughed at some of the stupider moments in Joe Dirt.

Was it a great flick? naw...there's better...glad it showed up on cable.

But everynow and then you just need something stupid to give the brain a bit o' relaxation.

Speaking of independent flicks...there used to be this bar in downtown LA I used to frequent been about 12 years now since I was there last.

I don't recall the name...but maybe some of you do...it was just an old beer bar at the bottom of one of those transient hotels that all the "writers" and "poets" lived in.

The walls were covered in writings, drawings, graffiti etc.

Well I digress...anyway on Sunday nights they used to show Independent films that were mostly done on 16mm...showed up one night and they stopped.

Apparently in a drunken rage the owner of the bar thew the projector off the top of the building.

Saw some pretty wild shit at that place.

For my money, you can't beat the original "Toxic Avenger" when it comes to Troma movies. For an ultra low budget flick it had shitloads of personality and it was exceedingly non-politically correct. Once people other than Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Hertz started directing Troma films they did tend to turn to shit. I saw an appaling one called "Stuff Stephanie in the Incinerator".

I didn't like "Meet the Feebles" as much as either "Bad Taste" or "Brain Dead". Some people love it but its just not my cup of tea. I'm assuming you've seen Jackson's "Heavenly Creatures" which I really enjoyed as well.

Other films I like:

If you haven't seen a film from Belgium called "Man bites Dog" you should really check it out. A brilliant black and white mock documentary. One of the all time classic black comedies. And when I say black I mean really BLACK.

I also love early Hal Hartley films like "Trust" "The Unbelievable truth" and "Simple Men". Not sure if you've heard of him but there's something about his laid back style I really appreciate.

And, as you've mentioned, Todd Solondz's films "Welcome to the Dollhouse" and "Happiness" are great.

And yes, "Gummo" rocks. I simply couldn't tear my eyes away from the screen. Brilliant.

yeah, Stuff Stephanie was bad even by my standards...but the worst thing I've seen Troma put their name to was "Blades" sounded like a great flick..a possessed lawn mower causing havoc on a golf course...but it made a cardinal sin of good bad filmmaking...it was boring...

holy shit! another GFYer that knows Hal Hartley's work! I loved "Trust" and also really dug "Amateur"

Todd Solondz is a pure genius...he had to have had one really fucked up life as a kid....his movies are so damn funny yet painfully true....

I was the same way with "Gummo"...unlike anything else I've ever seen...it's a real love it or hate it type of movie....my wife totally hated it...for me it was one of those movies that stuck with me for a long time afterwards....probably because most of the people weren't actors, they were real people working without a script...the redneck wretling with the chair and the kids shooting the bed-ridden gramma with a BB gun to see whether or not she was faking her coma were two scenes that just really struck me and stuck with me...and of course the guy pimping out his semi-retarded sister....

Meet Joe Dirt was cool. Great cast, and with Britanny Daniel and David Spade, what can go wrong?

I thought it was hilarious, even with that loser kid rock in there.
