The easiest way to be, and stay safe: Do not use virtualhosting; if you do, ensure they use SuExec/PHPSuExec, which is available to all CPanel installations.

What it does is set each virtualhost to run as it's own user, which means less likelihood of any cross-site fucking from someone's ancient WordPress install.

If you want to see what that does, change 'eval' to 'alert'.
