My New HD Cam! 1080 24p/30p 24Mbps AVCHD!
 

I just ordered it last night. I've been using one of panasonic's first generation AVCHD cameras, and have been very happy with the footage from it, but it only recorded at 13Mbps and 1440x1080. This new Canon is the first HD camera to record at the full 24Mbps that AVCHD supports, and does 30p (and 24p) at full 1920x1080. It has a 32GB flash drive in it, so no more memory cards. I got the shotgun mic for it too.

How's the image quality on it? I've been wanting to get an HD camera but don't want something huge and bulky but am wondering how much of a quality drop there will be.

The footage off of my old Panasonic which recorded at 11Mbps lower bitrate then this new canon (13Mbps compared to 24Mbps on the Canon) looks better then anything off my Sony VX2100 ever did. I've been very happy with the quality of AVCHD video, and this canon records at just 1Mbps under what HDV does (25Mbps) with a brand new codec compared to the old Mpeg2. Editing it can be a pain until you get your workflow down though, but things are much better then a year ago on the editing front.


This sample was downsized to 720p and encoded in WMV HD, so the raw footage looks much better.

Crap... my HF100 only does 17mbps. You just made me feel woefully inadequate.
