Going back to college after 30....

Lately I have been thinking about something I never finished, my education.

Having the lack of a real schedule, and all the time I could want on my hands, I have really been thinking about going to college again to finish my education. I don't have to worry about "work hours" or anything and could make my schedule how I see fit without any interruption or conflict.

Without going into my personal details I plan on going back to college after 30, any of you have experience going back to school after youve been out more than 10 years?

I am 32, havent been in a classroom in at least a decade, have been self employed for as long as I can remember (1999ish) but I am eager to get back and acheive my educational goals in life.

Any advice or comments?

That's about as far back as I can remember too.

Do it. Education is a wonderful thing. I've often thought about whether I should go back and get my MBA.

do it - people do it all the time - even in their 40's and 50's - learning is a process not a goal.

I take classes at the university all the time. There is always something new to learn:-) I took a semester of spanish about a year ago, just for the fun of it.

*hugs and kisses*

I graduated college when i was 28. I thought it was great. College was the best experience I ever had and the single greatest achievement in my life.

what would you be going back for ?

WarChild 09-16-2008 09:51 AM

Better to spend your time honing yourself in to a finely tuned killing machine.

After the Apocalypse comes we aren't going to have too much need for you fancy book learners.

Are you asking what classes I would be taking and/or majoring in, or are you asking if I am going to school for a reason other than self improvement?

Well, I won't be going to school to be a stock broker or anything like that... my interest has always been in the Arts and HUmanities, however as I age and all my friends are sitting around with their art degrees, I realize I am almost glad I didnt finish college as another art student.

Many of my friends graduated and have art degrees that are just about worthless unless they go back and specialize in something that utilizes that knowledge (web design or something) - but me, I was more into Sociology, Anthropology etc...

If I had to choose a major today it would be Sociology and I would not worry about all those fine art classes i was so adamant about taking when I was younger. I wanted to just sit around and paint, I worked as volunteer at art centers and thought that would be my life.

But now, as I aim to simply finish my education and better myself without any real goal or purpose other than getting rid of the regret of dropping out, I seem to put more emphasis on the study of society and humanity.

I've been thinking a lot about focusing on community, drug polict and its effects on society etc... when you start looking into Sociology there is so much I just want to learn about, with no reason or purpose.

Just to learn.

You got me beat.Iam starting the Fall quarter next week.I have been out for 12 years.

TubeTitans_SusieQ 09-16-2008 10:07 AM

That's exactly what I was wondering. Its good to go back for yourself just for improvement.... as long as you stay dedicated to it. Many of my friends have Art Degrees and I feel for them because they still don't know what they'll do with them. But all in all best of luck to you :)

Kudles 09-16-2008 10:08 AM

Good for you! Good luck!

That would be the only reason why I'd ever visit a university again. Hot (and smart) girls :winkwink:

baddog 09-16-2008 10:40 AM

I have been contemplating doing the same thing.
