Internet Connection Problem

I got a call from a friend who just bought a Dell Inspiron 530 (with Vista I think).

They can't connect to their ISP. It sounds like it is trying to use a dial up connection rather than broadband.

I tried walking them through the connection setup and everything sounds fine.

Any ideas (links appreciated)? I don't want to make a trip over there if I can avoid it.

Tell them to call Dell?

Told them it was ISP problem. ISP said it was a Dell problem.

I may just have them bring it over here and let me hook it up to a working net.

Did they connect directly to the ISP modem ( adsl or cable ). Bypass your router if you have one.

If yes, and it doesn't connect, are there user/pass properly put into the IPS modem by login into the modem?

Yes on direct (removed router). Yes on U/P.

Where's the "Never dial a connection" option on Vista Internet settings?

I need them to check that out.

Not familiar with Vista...

But wouldn't that be in the browser connection options ?

Maybe start from scratch...

Go into the control panel, system settings, hardware and delete the nic card . Reboot, the pc will find the nic and should install the drivers .... Make sure the drivers are the proper ones.

I'm on 2000 (NT). It's on internet options through the control panel.

I may do that after I look at it, if they bring it over.

make sure they have the latest drivers for their modem.. I was having wireless issues awhile back and updated my drivers and now I can pick up signals from anywhere and new drivers might help them too

Thanks. I'll use this thread as a checklist to make sure I don't overlook anything.
